Has no one started a thread on the CrowdStrike (Microsoft security) crash today?

My son and his friends made it to Marrakech about 5 hours late yesterday- not too bad considering the level of disruption. They’re enjoying their first day of 100+ degree heat in a country that is much different than any they’d been to before. Their flight out is 6am Monday back to BCN - hoping things run on time by then.

My d22’s girlfriend spent all day traveling yesterday. It was a mess but she finally got to LA. Started at 7am EDT and finally arrived at her lodging at 5am EDT/2amPDT. Almost 24 hrs of sucky travel including multiple rescheduled flights and delays that caused her to miss a flight, flying standby, and almost missing another connection.

Scary stories. Does anybody know if this kind of situation is covered with travel insurance? (This is just a curiosity, not stranded myself).

SIL made it home from London yesterday, arriving at DCA only 40 minutes late. He ubered home in plenty of time for D1 to make it to work in the ER. Haven’t yet heard from her how her night went…

Are things up and running today?

Driving from Northern Ohio to Canada today crossing at Port Huron, MI.

Name brand gas station we stopped at taking cash only for all things in and out - credit cards not working.

Waited an hour at the border to cross - they were saying partially due to the cyber screw up

D and SIL’s friends due in yesterday/today will be coming tomorrow AM with one exception who is still scheduled to arrive on time today from DC.

I practice yoga outside on weekends and this morning was the first time the class was not interrupted by the sound of the flights overhead ( major airport not far away).

I would think it falls under their “trip interruption” portion. Different plans have different durations for delays, how long after the expected arrival they were delayed, missed connections, etc.

My daughter is flying home today on SWA. She’s pretty much on time (25 min late is nothing) if it holds. In contrast, her friend’s flight got changed so first leg went through EWR and had a 5 hour layover. Somewhere in the midst of it, her connection got cancelled. Poor 17 year old kid is trying to stay calm.

We have friends flying from LGA to Tampa. So far, we haven’t heard about any issues…they are flying JetBlue.

I was in St. Thomas and St. Croix a couple of weeks ago visiting family. I heard that SW was coming there as well. From San Juan there are a zillion flights to USVI–that’s how I get there, JetBlue to/from San Juan, easy connection by them to STX or STT.

Is that today (Saturday) or yesterday when the Microsoft/Crowdstrike issue first surfaced?

Friday, I believe.

Friday morning it was all over the news. The stock tanked in pre-market trading, so it was known before 9:30 am Eastern time.

Our neighbors have been at the Detroit airport for 6 hours, trying to fly to VA Beach.

The flights are today (Saturday). My daughter’s friend got put on a flight to us (different city) since there were no more flights to her original destination. She just boarded. Hurray! Two girls in flight (coming to two different airports 3.5 hours apart). I’m just getting the shuttle ready.

SWA: read somewhere they were not as affected as much because they are using an older, not updated computer system.

Know your rights: http://FlightRights.gov.

From Trans. Secretary Buttigieg:

“I am hearing reports of some airlines only offering flight credits to passengers for cancelled flights. Let me be clear — you are entitled to get your money back promptly if your flight is cancelled and you don’t take a rebooking.”

that being said, if it wasn’t airlines fault, guessing they’ll fight paying for issues…

Ugh. I was hopeful that things would be cleared up today. It was pretty terrible for D22’s girlfriend yesterday. She had a 7am flight from the east coast to LA but didn’t get there until 3am eastern — many different flights later.

That seems to have prevented them from being affected by this incident, but it may have been part of why they had so much trouble in December 2022 when their computer systems could not keep up with the volume of cancellations, rebookings, reschedulings, etc…

Jym, I’m so sorry for your hubby. I broke my left wrist in late September, and had a cast on for several months. I cannot fathom having to use a computer all day. I didn’t need surgery. My hand specialist was my cousin, who I use to push in a stroller! At least I had his mother to drive me there ASAP.
