Has your alma mater specifically marketed toward your kids?

My wife and I met at a NESCAC school. Every year, we get a Valentine’s Day card from the Development Office, which is pretty cute.

Our son is a high school senior this year, and he applied to our alma mater, among other schools. He also applied to a HYP, where his grandmother received a graduate degree 50+ years ago. That school sent her a lovely letter, essentially saying that admissions is so selective that they can’t really give her grandson any boost, but that they appreciate the ongoing relationship she has with the school and the faith she showed in them by encouraging him to apply. Lovely.

Our alma mater hasn’t contacted us in any way whatsoever. Which made me realize, they never sent him (or us) any recruitment material during his search process, either, despite having info in the alumni office about his age, name, address, etc. It hasn’t been impressive. Believe me, they need applicants and happy alumni a lot more than HYP does, and yet that was who reached out.

So it has me wondering - did your undergraduate school do any kind of special recruitment communication, drawing upon your alumni status? I feel like alumni kids would be a really good group of potential applicants for schools to target.

My alma mater only gives a boost to alumni kids who apply ED and have no issue with that. My S went to grad school at my H’s alma mater and my H did get a nice note from alumni relations, but only after my S sent in his deposit.
