Has your college kid ever had a summer internship our of state?

S1 had an internship outside of Portland the one summer. Finding housing was a slog. He finally got one through Craigslist, renting a furnished bedroom in a house with another renter and an older retired man, owned by his daughter. It worked out fine for two months.

When he looked for housing after graduation, no way was he living with roommates again.

These are summer jobs, right? I love how summer jobs in college are now called internships.

My younger daughter had a job in Boston after her junior year in college. She initially found housing using Craigslist but it suddenly fell through in early May. I think she then turned to her college’s Facebook page for alumni and found something that worked out.

@thumper1, no, sorry. His summer “job” last year was working as a general laborer for 40 hours a week. Coming home very physically tired. The “internship” he’s looking for is in his actual field of study. I think if it was with a good company, he’d work for free…although I don’t know how I feel about that. It can only help him get a job when he graduates. Maybe they should be called apprenticeships.

Kiddo had 2 summer internships in Boston. Both times she rented a room from a frat. At first I was not sure it was a good idea, but the frat house was filled with other summer interns.

Yep freshman year Brooklyn, sophomore Manhattan, and junior San Francisco. We paid for housing each time.

Yes, my older D (currently a senior) did out of state internships twice - one was after sophomore year in WI and the second was after junior year in NY - we live in CA and her school is in central IN. Both times she made enough to pay rent and save a bit but in NY her “rent” ate up a good chunk of her income so she had to watch her pennies whereas she made serious bank in WI. Go figure. The WI company helped her find housing but in NY she was on her own. Midwestern companies are nicer to work for - ALSO go figure. In NY the workplace was located in an expensive area and we didn’t feel comfortable using Craigslist (nb: there are a lot of scammers, if you didn’t know) as she was going to have to rent sight unseen so we found friends of friends who found a local listserv where residents advertised shared living situations. It wasn’t easy for her to arrange for housing and I was pretty annoyed that the internship company left the interns on their own in an area with a tight housing market but it worked out well and was definitely worth the trouble for the work experience.

Congratulations! Summer internships can be hard to get, but they are valuable as resume builder AND helping to refine career interests

DS had 2 internships in Boston area, where he went to college. In both cases he (along with college buddies) had to find summer sublets. It’s a pain. He was lucky that Boston has good mass transit and good bike lanes.

D had an internship in Austin this summer. It paid well enough to cover housing, but we had some difficulty finding the housing. She did not want a roommate, because there would be no opportunity to meet the roommate ahead of time, and no good backup plan if it didn’t work out. We finally found her a studio apartment in a student housing building and paid a lot for it. Be aware of unseen costs… the complex charged $750 for a one-time “sublet fee” on top of the $1000+/month rent!
The internship was a great experience though.

D17 stayed on Vandy campus for last summer internship in a lab at school. DH went there and co-signed the sublease for her from a law student. It is very nice, safe apartment.

She will be in Charlotte this summer and we need to find housing for her for 10 weeks. Her employer provides very generous housing stipend and hourly pay.

“he’d work for free.” - I thought that was only legal for nonprofits or with college co-op (for credits). Perhaps others can give more insights here.

If you are comfortable mentioning the city, the group can probably help more with housing leads.

Internship provided corporate housing/apartment and the other did an airbnb in which was super easy and worked great. I know several kids that are lining up airbnb’s now for their summer internships. Initially our hope was internship at least covered expenses, since the experience can be worth a lot. Fortunately both were tech jobs that paid super well and more than covered it with housing allowance or by providing the apartment.

The ones I saw for free were for college credit.

My D did an internship her junior summer on the NH Seacoast which is notoriously expensive in the summer. She paid a fortune to sublet an apartment from a UNH student for 8 weeks and then had to move around a bit the last two weeks before it ended. She was given a stipend but it didn’t fully cover the rent unfortunately. In the end, all is good, she was offered a FT position with the company upon graduation.
