This is something we are discussing, I think the hard thing would be finding someplace to live for 2 months. Anyone, what has been you and your student’s experience.
You have a typo in your title, but it’s not too hard to figure out (but you might want to fix it if you have time). I’ll post a response separately in another post.
Yes, both for computer firms in CA. They both provided enough money to cover housing and gave him a list of landlords who had apartments available for the summer.
DS#1 had 2 summer internships in the city where his college was located. One year he lived off campus and worked out something with his landlord to stay and to help find summer tenants. Through online links through the college (back then the facebook groups and such weren’t really a big thing) they were able to locate summer interns. The second summer he utilized online ads to sublet a place. IIRC, there are lots of sites where summer sublets are posted. Check with the colleges and in the cities the student is looking… DS#2 stayed in a frat house of a college in the city he was interning. Good luck!
Both of my kids lived out of the house for the junior year internship. D1 was paid enough that could get her own housing for 2.5 months (college dorm in NYC). D2 didn’t get paid as much, but housing came with her internship. Even though we lived in NYC, she opted to live with the interns.
A lot of kids do sublets over the summer. It is much easier in a big city.
Yes. Both times he made enough to pay for housing. The first year it was in his college town, so he found housing by talking to friends, especially athletes, who would be in town for the summer. The second time was a wholly new place. He started with the friend/recent grad network and found a place. It was in a big city and he had to sublet. Both times he had roommates. I suspect there is a network of students looking for housing, formally or informally, that you can tap into. I don’t think my kid had to look at an online source. At large schools, there are FB groups for students looking for housing.
Years ago, my son had an OOS co-op and summer internship. The company had several interns so they had housing arrangements for them. This made it possible to pay for housing, carpool to the worksite, and save some money.
My kid had an unpaid internship in DC with our home state Senator while in college. She’d saved her money to cover most of her expenses (I gave her some grocery money, figuring I’d have spent it if she lived at home)… She found a place to live (sublet, inexpensive by DC standards) near American University during the summer. She did have an advantage of being in the city the semester before on a program through her college, so she was able to go see apartments in person.
My one kid worked full time for her college across the country for one summer. She also took a class, and lived in the house that had a July 1 lease start date. It worked out fine.
Thanks all! Makes me feel better!
Yes. DD spent 2 months living in DC and interning at a non-profit. Found a sublet that worked out great on-line.
Yes. DD so far had five internships. All of them but two were out of state of our residence. She is attending school on the opposite coast. The summer after freshman year she had an offer for internship in Silicon Valley and in the city she goes to school. When we weighed housing cost for the summer in Silicon Valley the take home pay didn’t make much sense so she took internship at her college town. Next year she took internship in another state but we were able to find good housing arrangement. This summer she had two offers on opposite coasts one of which was in Silicon Valley again, but this time for a large company and came with free corporate housing.
D had an unpaid internship with a nonprofit in another state that provided housing, another internship in her college city, where she found a room to rent in a house, things went badly in that situation and she ended up moving back to campus for the rest of the summer (more expensive but it worked), and the third year she had an internship in the suburbs of Chicago that happened to be right by her college roommate’s house. They had an extra room and let her stay rent free for the summer, and she biked to work. That one was hard to figure out because she didn’t have a car and public transportation wasn’t available.
S has had 2 internships out of the state where he was going to college. The 1st was in our home state, so he just lived with us. The 2nd was for NASA on the East Coast. They gave him suggestions of where he could have a short term rental. That summer he had 3 rentals to pay—old college apt, new college apt AND summer rental—pricey!
Yes, subleasing. They had a blast. Middle son has also subleased his apt to a student while he was home last summer.
S has completed two internships so far and is currently deciding between two offers for summer 2019. The first was close to his OOS campus, so he paid to stay in the dorms (and take a summer class to boot). The second was on the other coast but he was able to secure a dorm room in another college. Evidently, many colleges open their dorms to other full time students who are interning in the area. Both of his offers for 2019 provide intern housing in addition to pay.
That’s interesting and good to know colleges will open their dorms!
Oldest son had a paid internship that included an extended stay hotel for two months.
Youngest daughter doing an unpaid internship at our state legislature with our local representative. She’s commuting from home.
For an internship during college, one of my kids rented a dorm room at a local university. For a later internship during an MBA program, the company arranged housing for interns in local apartment buildings.
DD had an OOS internship last summer that came with housing at a local university. Those she is waiting on for this summer either include housing or a stipend for housing. Those with a stipend will provide a list of places that rent to student interns. Fwiw, DD had a great time exploring a new city and making life-long friends. They still collaborate online and support each other, and some will be meeting up over spring break this year.
