Have I overkilled Chem? Chem major at JHU

So I starting taking chemistry my sophomore year through the basic honors program. Junior year I took AP chem, and now senior year through a PSEO opportunity at U of Minn Twin Cities I am taking analytical chemistry(a chem major course). Will my transcript appear too chem oriented? By the end of my senior year I will have taken general bio at the U of Minn Twin Cities, as well as honors physics (the only one offered) at my hs. Also, I heard the chem program at JHU is extremely competitive. Are your chances increased at all for a perspective chem major if you apply ED? Or am I better off listing my other passion 1st, mechanical engineering?

haha. I took Calculus 1+2, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra at Harvard extension when I was in highschool. I even took all the math classes offered at my highschool. Did I think I overextended myself? Never. Its always good to show depth versus breadth. Its actually a benefit to yourself that you exhibit keen interest by diving into coursework BEYOUND the level that is offered at your school. It showns your ambition, your ability to confront the world, and your independence to drive forward with courses beyond your grade level for the sake of learning.

Your chances are increased immensely if you choose to orient your college workload by focusing on key chemistry topics such as analystic chemistry, intro chemistry, etc…Since this is all relevant to our chemistry course major. It would without a doubt seem like your the type of guy that would love chemisry since you seem to have exhibited your passion for the topic through rigorous college level courses as a highschooler.

With that said, apply ED, hope for the best. If you list MechE, you will be applying for the Whiting School of Engineering, so even if you did want to revert to chemistry later on when you change your mind, you have to change schools I believe, to the Krieger School of Arts and Science.

If you love chemistry, then I don’t see why you shouldn’t have done all those things. It really shows character. If JHU is your absolute first choice, by all means apply ED :]

You should definitely continue studying chemistry, but I just can’t understand why you would want to  I took chem hon, ap chem, and I’d had enough.

Do many schools look down on programs like PSEO? I heard a lot of advice saying I should’ve rather stayed at my hs and taken every ap offered, even though mostly the government and econ courses remain and I have completed 4 thus far. Has anyone else ever gone through a PSEO program and been denied admission based on their post secondary decision?

I don’t think so. By a heavy course load I don’t think colleges want to see you take every AP. Just enough APs to keep your interest…I highly doubt anyone can take AP Latin, AP Spanish, AP French, AP Music Theory, AP Art History, AP Calc, AP sciences, AP Histories, AP electives, etc. in their high school career. To take the AP sciences and go above and beyond in that field plus taking one or two AP courses in other disciplines shows that you have a passion for something (chem) and that you are also ambitious and interested in other fields.
I think it can only help you.
