<p>Cell service appears to be out in most of Vermont. We dropped off freshman son for orientation at Champlain College last Friday and we have not been able to get through to him via his cell phone (Sprint) since late Saturday. We have been able to google chat, but that’s all and that is hit or miss. Has anyone else been having this problem?</p>
<p>My mom lives in Vermont. Her phone service and power have been intermittent. She says she never has any reception on her cell phone (even in good weather.) But I don’t know what carrier she uses.</p>

<p>unsoccer-mom - My son is also a freshman at Champlain! Finally a com-padre on CC!! Will be sending you a pm. I just talked to my son about 20 minutes ago. The college was relatively unaffected by the hurricane since they are on a hill. Classes started as scheduled yesterday. I had also not talked to my son and was also a bit worried so finally texted him to tell him that and he immediately called. Cell service is spotty up there (we have AT&T, but we had no problem until I moved to the dead zone area of our house.</p>
<p>Cell service appears to be spotty in Troy NY since Sunday AM. DD doesn’t anwer our calls, and only called once “how do I get my textbooks since i missed prepack?”</p>
<p>However, I don’t think this is due to Irene.</p>
<p>D is also a student in the Burlington area. We have AT&T and have been texting a lot and spoken on the phone twice. Everything is proceeding normally at her school, they seem completely unaffected.</p>
<p>Burlington wasn’t really affected much at all. It is the smaller towns and villages that have had the most damage and not quite as north as Burlington.</p>

<p>soozievt - Seven or eight years ago when my oldest son was looking at Champlain, you and I were talking about meeting up. Within a few days of when we were going up, your daughter was in a car accident so that didn’t happen. Who knew that it would be my youngest that would end up at Champlain after all!</p>

<p>I can’t get my son on the phone, and he’s in Chicago. It has nothing to do with Irene, and everything to do with whether he is doing something more interesting than talking to me when I call.</p>
<p>^JHS your son sounds just like my oldest. He’s so aggravating. As to Vermont, our cell phones only work in selected spots, mostly mountain tops. Sometimes we get lucky with roaming in towns. It’s very aggravating.</p>
<p>I am based in VT but my D is now in Boston and her VT phone does not seem to be accepting calls, although she can text and receive texts. Champlain College area is fine. There is a ton of fun things to do in BTV as all the kids arrive, so I’m sure he’s just being a boy and ramping up his social and academic life for the semester. PM me is you need me to drive by and check on him. ;)</p>
<p>p.s. his cell should get fine coverage in Burlington under normal circumstances. As you drive away from there you get spottier coverage.</p>
<p>Nice to know about good coverage under normal circumstances…Snowflake. Finally, heard from him this morning. Some online research turned up the fact the a Sprint fiber optic cable was damaged in the flooding; hence the lack of cell service. All is well!!!</p>

<p>Not getting any kind of calls, texts, etc., from your kid at school is a good thing! College students are not supposed to call (text) mom & dad all the time. </p>
<p>If something bad happens to them believe me you will hear from someone.</p>
<p>We, too, have been in spotty contact with S in VT, but it’s because he’s neck deep in having what seems to be a good time. The first night we left him he didn’t even text us to say goodnight (broke his mom’s heart) and we were only across the street. They all seem to be fine in and around Burlington.</p>
