Have our applications been read?

Seeing as interview requests for the Presidential and Trustee scholarships are coming out soon, does it mean all those who applied before Dec. 1st have had their applications already read? If we don’t get selected for an interview, does our application go back into the RD pile and get reread for a decision in April?

Thanks!

It is my sense based on observations here (in other words, I have no connection with the admissions office whatsoever) that December 1st applications are given a quick review and placed in two piles: those to be considered for Trustee and Presidential scholarships and those to be considered for regular admission.

The applications in the Trustee and Presidential pile are then carefully considered and the scholarship candidates are selected from that pile. Those not invited for scholarships go back on the regular admission pile.

After the scholarship candidates are selected, ALL the other applications are given a careful and complete review. MANY of those who applied by the December 1st deadline*** will be awarded scholarships with their admissions in March, and still more will hear about additional scholarships in April (my student was notified of an additional scholarship on April 27th her year!). So if you do not hear in Jan/early Feb, your application is still being considered, and scholarships are still possible. If you had a great first semester, get that report card in for them to see as soon as possible! If you have received additional awards or increased your test scores, be sure your admissions counselor knows. https://camel2.usc.edu/admceebsearch/ugappfindcounselor.aspx

Good luck!!!

***Those who applied to the January 10th deadline will not receive merit scholarships, except for the NMSF Presidential. All applicants to both deadlines who submit the CSS/Profile, FAFSA and copies of parent and student tax returns will be considered for NEED-based financial aid.

Thank you so much for the fast reply! I was just named an Intel Semifinalist, so I just emailed my admissions counselor that. Thank you for that link!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is a HUGE accomplishment. I am SO proud of all our applicants this year   :)

I’m sorry about hijacking the thread with this question, but when should we expect to hear about scholarships? If we are not offered a scholarship, will we be told of the denial, or should we just assume so after a certain point?
Also, I changed two of my final semester courses and was offered Phi Theta Kappa by an institution I am dual-enrolled through. Is that worth telling my counselor about?

For your first two questions, investigate the threads with posts in them today - the answers are out there :)

For your third question, it certainly can’t hurt - send the email!

Just bouncing off of OP’s post to add that all decisions about Trustee and Presidential candidates were made by the first week in January. This means that if you send additional info, including results of Dec SATs (which come out in Jan) that will not be factored in for scholarship consideration. However, if you are already a candidate, you may certainly bring new awards, honors, SAT scores to the attention of the interviewers. If you are not among those invited to interview, your new info will be added to your file and be considered for admissions.

At this point, decisions for scholarships have been made and it’s a matter of time (tick tock/ tick tock) until results are in the mail.

If you have new/additional information that may help your admission chances, then you should send an email to let the committee members know. Make sure that the information is worthy of sharing with them, however.

“At this point, decisions for scholarships have been made .”
This needs to be corrected slightly. Decisions have been made as to who to invite to interview for scholarships. And a student can be invited to interview for Trustee and be bumped down to Presidential or Deans, and vice versa. So applicants who DO receive an invitation to interview for a merit scholarship, along with their USC acceptance packet, need to be sure to come to USC for the interview. The amount of your scholarship will NOT be finalized until after you have interviewed .

I just wanted to add that if you get deans there is no interview. It is just the acceptance packet with the deans scholarship.

some scholarships have been picked but not all. remember interviews DO have a purpose, just because you got an interview or didn’t doesn’t mean you got a scholarship or didn’t. Also the rejected interviews open up scholarships for people who didn’t necessarily get interviews.

Redderick, I’m not sure what you mean by writing: “Also the rejected interviews open up scholarships for people who didn’t necessarily get interviews.”

That statement is not, unfortunately, correct. The university invites more applicants to interview for the major scholarships than they expect will attend USC. The have a very good idea of the number of students they will yield and invite more than that number to interview. Therefore, there is no money left over.

There are, however, many additional smaller scholarships which are budgeted for and awarded at a later time that do not require interviews.

"Also the rejected interviews open up scholarships for people who didn’t necessarily get interviews. "

Where did you get this idea? There is no “well we didnt get as many kids enrolling as we thought so there is left over money for more Presidential or Trustee scholarships this year” policy… Interviews are required for Trustee or Presidents level scholarships. Period. Those who didnt interview, or who were not invited to interview, are not awarded those scholarships after May 1, after scholarship winners have made the decision where they will be matriculating.
