Have you been paying attention to Ireland?

I have been reading the Irish newspapers all day

LandslideOfLove

Yup!!

Yes and I am so happy. Gives me a great deal of hope.
Though I am several generation removed from my Irish ancestors, my Irish O’Irish name gives me enough of a connection to still feel an enormous amount of pride.

Did you see the pictures of rainbows and double rainbows over Dublin today? Somebody upstairs likes the results  <:-P <:-P

I am one generation removed from that other Ireland. Young people are bringing great change to the world. I was speaking to my d and her friend about this yesterday. Kids of their generation will not hide who they are. I think that is great and it will lead to a better world for all of us.

Hope they like who they marry. Divorce isn’t so easy in Ireland.

Yes, indeed! Bravo to them!

Yes, I’ve been following. Fantastic result!

I loved that touching video of the elderly couple urging their compatriots to vote yes that was in the New York Times this morning. It put such a real face on the views of everyday people.

Yes! Now all the priests can marry . . . oh . . . never mind.

Thanks for the update. No, I had not been paying attention. Am away from home this weekend, so have not heard the news (but have obviously found time to check in on CC). How wonderful for the Irish!

@saintfan, you troublemaker! :smiley:

Saint’s comment did NOT hit me until BD’s response. Now I’m literally LOLing.

She is always full of trouble. You gotta watch her closely!

tom1944 is right-the young people are the ones who will bring sweeping changes around the world. D is going to prom with several of her friends, including a gay classmate and his boyfriend. Both sets of parents are fine with it, the school administration is fine with it and the group of friends is fine with it. I know that in some high schools this is still against the rules, but I love how here, at least, no one is batting an eye. And gay marriage is legal in WA, so the friend is already dreaming of what kind of guy he will marry one day. I love it that a whole country-and one of the more conservative ones-has just voted to to make it legal.

I don’t know if it’s true of your kids, but Fang Jr and his friends have always found it incomprehensible that gays and lesbians weren’t allowed to marry. For them, it’s as if we’d said redheads can’t marry. They just couldn’t make sense of it.

That’s been my thought process since leaving the Catholic church when I was in my early teens, CF. Had I not gone to a Catholic K-8, it probably would’ve been my thought process since… forever since it’s how my parents are (probably stems from the fact that my mom’s parents couldn’t marry in some states and countries and my dad’s parents couldn’t have if it was a different era).

Ditto here, CF.

To me it is more than marriage. My D graduated HS in 2008 there were a significant number of kids that were out. We used to discuss how in my generation there were not kids in my HS class that were out. The first group of openly gay kids I ever knew about were in a special dorm at college. A segregated gay dorm. I believe it was only for males also.

To my D and her friends it was beyond their thought process that people would have to hide who they were. Live a secret life. They would never stand for that. Not for themselves, their family or their friends. Not for anyone.
