Have you ever had/seen a professor bump a D to a C to pass the student?

Lets say you visit their office hours a lot and they see (at least I hope) that you re really putting effort into the class with notes, homework, and assignments. I just did terrible on one exam due to forgetting a calculator (my mistake) but average and above average on quizzes, homework, and other exams.

Why not make an appointment, and ask him what you can do?

If you have Bs and Cs on your other exams, quizzes and homeworks, 1 D is not going to fail you.

This happens constantly… Visiting office hours can only help you. Some of that is the professor noticing your effort, the rest is the fact that you can actually learn things by going to office hours! (Shocking to some people)

It depends. If the “D” is a “low ‘D’”, then I wouldn’t expect a professor to bump me up. However, if the “D” is near the “C” range, then maybe.

For the record: I’m not suggesting you make an appointment to suggest a “bump.” I’m suggesting you go to ask what YOU can do to improve your grade.

I would indicate I a willingness to do some kind of extra credit or other work, extra testing, something to show a you’re not just asking for a favor. Its a gesture that is often appreciated. You may get the bump and not have to do the work.

Thank you, everyone! I was asking because I was just curious.

RE: extra credit…When you ask for extra credit, you are asking the professor to do more work because you couldn’t be bothered/didn’t try hard enough/didn’t get help/didn’t study on the regular work.

Also check your class online system and see what your grade is…look at the syllabus and see what you would need to get on the final to get a C. Is it possible for you to get a C?

If you’re borderline, then demonstrated effort and/or upward trend over the course of the semester can result in a bump.

However, do NOT go to the professor and ask what you need to get on the final to get a C. And do not ask the professor to calculate your grade for you. If you have a syllabus and have kept track of your grades, you should be able to do this yourself. To ask the professor to do the work for you will not be looked upon favorably.

You could go to office hours and ask for tips about how best to study for the final (if this hasn’t been covered amply in class). As it’s nearly the end of the semester, I don’t know if last minute extra credit is the best use of your time.

A D grade is barely passing in that colleges will typically give credit for it, although it may not necessarily be accepted for majors that require the course or other courses that require that course as a prerequisite.

No. If that happens, all hell breaks loose.

First off, a D is a passing grade.

Secondly, I think it really depends. If you are at a very low D, the odds are low, but if you’re within 2% of a C or so and are a good student the odds are decent.

Don’t you still have a final coming up?

Why not put your efforts into acing that final-- and earning the “bump”-- as opposed to asking for a grade that hasn’t been earned?

I have known instances where professors forgive a test-- meaning they realize it was an aberration, if the final is very good and the other assignments and tests are in line with the final.

Do NOT go in asking for a “bump”.

Thank you again, everyone. But everything was taken care of. Of course I know not to go asking for a bump. The original question was not meaning to go straight to the office and “ask” for a bump.

Thanks again though everyone!
