Aside from my family, the best thing that happened in my life started as a minor car accident.
I was an uninsured driver, aged 20. Dad paid all my college expenses so the deal was that I was responsible for my own car insurance. I was clueless and thought I was a great driver. I didn’t see why I needed to waste all that money. I didn’t get car insurance and dad never asked to see proof.
It’s 1984’ish. I pull up to Hermosa Beach and open my car door, just as a BMW drives by. A handsome yuppie I will call Brent steps out of the now-bashed up car. I tell him I don’t have insurance and I will pay cash to have it repaired. He accepts that. I have to fess up to my dad, who agrees to give me the $1500 for the repair, on the condition that I pay him back and immediately get insurance. Dad was none too pleased.
Brent and I chat on the phone about practicalities. During the conversation, it’s clear he is interested in more than just the car and he eventually asks me out on a date. I am a new wave princess who would never date a yuppie, and I politely tell him no. I think everything will be dandy because his damage has been paid for.
Then comes the letter from the DMV. The penalty at the time for being an uninsured motorist was automatic suspension of your driver’s license. My license was to be suspended for 6 months. This is a complete disaster in So Cal, where there was virtually no public transport. My parents both worked full time, and my siblings had moved out already. I wouldn’t be able to drive myself to work or college. So I had to escape.
I found a study abroad program through my university. Dad agreed to fund this, but I think he didn’t see any realistic options. Despite being furious with me, he viewed it as a chance for me to have an interesting experience and get college credit. I would leave right away for the introductory session, then start the program. I ended up being overseas for 8 months.
This event transformed my life in ways I am still grateful for every day. If Brent hadn’t been driving by at just the right time so that I could smash his door, and if he hadn’t sought revenge for being spurned, I am 100% certain that everything about the life I live today would simply not exist. I learned so much about myself and the world by studying abroad. Yes, my stupidity ended up giving me a life that is too good to be true. Brent, if you’re reading this, thanks!
