Is there something you’ve had to sacrifice with the college you chose? What was it and was it worth it?

I’m just wondering because I’ll be applying this year and one of the colleges I want to apply to is UChicago. I absolutely love this school but there would be one thing I’d be missing out on: marching band. I know this may sound silly because it’s such an amazing school but it’s an activity I really love and wanted to participate in while in college also, but they don’t have one.

So what about you guys? Has anyone been in the same situation? What did you do?

I would have raked in a couple thousand dollars a semester in excess scholarships and my parents would have bought me a car if I’d have stayed in state. I never seriously considered it though.

Quite the contrary to the poster above me, I’m giving up the experience of college far away from home to go to my college. I’m fully expecting my mother to be knocking on my door at least 3x a week.

I sacrificed a state scholarship, but the school I’m going to offers a tuition discount for my state that gives us in-state tuition. The difference isn’t really that much in terms of college costs- especially considering that I’m a transfer student and have absolutely no debt from my first two years!

I sacrificed money. My state school would have been monumentally cheaper than my current school. However, I still got decent Financial Aid so I’m grateful for the price I have to pay.

I also sacrificed fairly mild winters for harsh Minnesota ones, but such is life. :)

drum corps is not really comparable to college marching band… college marching band is like a huge party. But, if you play a woodwind, you can still march drum corps. Pick a brass instrument (I recommend bari or euph) and off you go. I’m also a sax player, and aged out of DCI in 07 after 2 years on baritone.

This is fun, because right after I read the first line, I thought of band.
Concert’s not quite the same. The closest I’ll possibly get at my school is pep band. But I might transfer in a couple years to a school that has a band, so…I don’t know.
Sadly, I’m not that good at it, but I really liked it.

Also, I’m far from home, but I never really wanted to go to any of the schools in the state.

I gave up theatre. I went to a performing arts high school as a musical theatre major, then around junior year I realized I just didn’t have the skills to go to college for it and that I didn’t really want that life. My school now isn’t known for theatre really at all, and I’m definitely going to miss it…

That, and the weather. I’m trading the Florida weather for cold Wisconsin winters! I grew up in them though, so I think I’ll be all right. :)

@crs1909 I’ll be missing getting to see my puppy on a regular basis too even though I don’t know where I’ll be going yet, all the colleges I’m looking at are a few hours away.
