For next year’s applicants looking for info: S25 was waitlisted in RD. 1510 SAT, 3.98 UW, 9 APs (all 5s), strong but not national-level ECs in theater, debate, & music. Interviewed but did not visit. Applied for financial aid.

Hello, Thank you for sharing.

S25 was waitlisted as well with similar stats (except he is in the IB program–full diploma) He applied for pure math. We also applied for financial aid. He (and we) like Haverford and felt that the values of the college spoke to him, but he did not have room in the supplements to elaborate. He’s been WL at a couple of places, but Haverford is one he’d like to write a letter for. Knowing however that many waitlists are ‘need aware’ should we encourage the effort? There’s not much to share by way of awards. He could submit research papers, abstracts that weren’t part of his application, but for him it’s more about a fit in terms of values–at least from what we could glean virtually. He did not have an opportunity to interview (too late…and anyway, he came down with the flu soon after submitting his penultimate application. He didn’t manage to finish one for Reed that had extended its deadline) and we cannot visit now. I am only now finding out the unfortunate connection between WL and financial aid. Would appreciate your thoughts on this. He’s been WL from less selective schools (we presume b/c of financial aid.) Best wishes to your and your family through this process.

Yes, we were disappointed—he really liked Haverford’s focus on their honor code & felt like he would be a good fit there.

Looking at last year’s CDS, they offered 1342 applicants a place on the waiting list & only 27 eventually got in. Given that Haverford is need aware, I assume that our kids’ waitlist odds are extremely low. I think we’re going to wait & see how the rest of this week goes—once all decisions are in, if my S25 still wants to write a letter to Haverford that’s fine, but it seems unlikely to have an impact. Good luck to you & your kid.

S25 accepted. Campus visit. Self Tour, campus was mostly closed early June. Interview. Sat 1490. Gpa 3.8
Grant $40k annual.

Aid, waitlist, acceptances with my kids going to college and in college is so varied. Two of my kids didn’t get into their #1 with their college experience. 1 is soon to graduate.
Wish them the best. Hopefully a silver lining is found and they thrive whichever college they choose will best meet their goals

Thanks, & congrats to your S25!

Congratulations! Wishing you all the best.

Thank you very much. We are in the same boat. He also really liked Haverford’s values/honor code and although other schools have it, it felt different at Haverford. We knew they gave good aid, but among waitlist candidates, the chances are slim.

Thank you again for your perspective.

Good luck! I hope this coming week brings much better news.

As a Haverford alum, I do think the honor code is different. I would have your son write a heartfelt, but concise, LOCI emphasizing how he felt the Code is different from at other schools, as well as any new accomplishments/awards, etc. I don’t know if the wait list is need aware, but it can’t hurt to take his shot.

Thank you! Of all the waitlists he’s on, this is the one that speaks to him the most: the honor code, the values, the program, the teachers. We just have to warn him not to get his hopes up or not to invest too much time writing the letter. Concise and heartfelt sounds just right. There are probably quite a few who share our predicament. Thank you for the advice.
