Haverford College Apartments

Any helpful advice or suggestions for an incoming freshman who will be living in the Haverford College Apartments?

yea i lived in them last yr. some useful items are -kitchen stuff->plates silverware, pots, pans cups microwave ice cube trays that nonsense. a tv and stereo is good for the common room…futons or extra chairs and tables r always good for the common room aswell, even though u get a 2 seat crappy couch and 2 chairs and a small table and bookshelf thing. bring ur bathroom stuff and tissues and toilet paper(given like 2-3 roles a week but is bad) for ur room bring power strip, alarm clock, desk light(the one they gave me was broke), fans(a must for certain times), sheets, hangers, hamper. posters and stuff r good for all over. for the winter make sure u have warm clothes/hats/gloves/scarf cuz the walk can be a little long. umbrellla good idea too…hope this helps …sorry for the crappy writing though…

Thanks! That helps alot! Did you like living in the apartments? Did you feel too far away from the rest of campus?

There’re plenty of malls, dollar stores and thrift stores on and around the main line. If you’re traveling from too far, you may just want to buy your sundries and supplies once you get to HC. Also, your roommates may be bringing some of the items as well so coordinating with them maybe a good idea and save some cash.

Any idea on how long the walk is from the Haverford College Apartments to the gym, library or dining hall? Is it worth bringing a bike? I know that the campus is generally pretty compact but didn’t ever look at the HCA and don’t have a sense of the distances to the rest of the campus. Are there generally a lot of freshmen in the apartments or are most of them in the other dorms? Do people who live in the apartments tend to go back and forth a lot during any given day or evening or is the distance great enough to discourage that?

hey, i am a rising sophomore. i didn’t live in HCA last year but have a lot of friends who did. the walk from HCA to the main campus is about 10 mins. There are “community bikes” all around the college (just grab one and go wherever you need to on campus) so it’s not really necessary to bring your own.
there are a lot of freshmen in the apartments- more than 100, maybe even 150. so don’t worry about being isolated.
<<do people=“” who=“” live=“” in=“” the=“” apartments=“” tend=“” to=“” go=“” back=“” and=“” forth=“” a=“” lot=“” during=“” any=“” given=“” day=“” or=“” evening=“” is=“” distance=“” great=“” enough=“” discourage=“” that=“”>>
it depends on the person and the time. there are people who leave their apartments in the morning and come back late after being done with classes and meals. others come in between for naps, etc. usually if you have a one hour break between classes, you avoid going back to HCA and just hang around in one of the libraries. but if you have more time, you can definitely make the trip back to the HCA. </do>

hope that helps.

That helps alot, nhrman. Thanks! I like the idea of the apartments, the kitchen and living room etc., but it did seem like it might be a bit isolated from the rest of campus, particularly as a freshman. Glad to hear that isn’t the case. And the community bike idea is great!

What is the living space like in the apartments, size of bedrooms and common space, closets, room to store stuff, etc.?
