Haverford College or Yale-NUS for Physics/CS

You need to check the temperature in Haverford, PA. It’s not Singapore. From September to March, I doubt you will want to bike 5 miles in freezing cold.

If you didn’t have much of a college choice in a third-world country, a school like Haverford is a catch. Singapore is not a third-world country. Yale-NUS is not a 3rd rate college or a minor league college to Yale University. Yale-NUS admit rate is already below 6%, even lower than Yale, Harvard, Stanford… And from Yale-NUS, you can do a study abroad - not with Haverford - but with Yale University or Swarthmore. To give up Yale-NUS in Singapore, I’d want something in return, something more than the misery of a Craigslist roach motel.

The better option is attending Yale - NUS with a year a abroad in Amherst, Swarthmore, Vassar, etc ( similar experience as Haverford).
Then you can go to graduate school in US.

For me the problem is not if he don’t have all College experiences if he live out of campus, the problem is that he will not be able to concentrate on the study thinking about the economic problems.

Living 5 miles away from college for three years in the cheapest place you can find, trying to cycle there and back everyday in fall and winter? Forget it. It sounds like hell on earth. And no, it does NOT get you closer to an amazing tech scene. So many things that can go wrong with this scenario, and then the loans.
Take your affordable option, enjoy the year in the US without apartment and money worries, and save up for grad school.

You won’t be able to bike in the winter (November through March). There’ll be snow and ice, freezing wind gusts, black ice. And I’d be wary of anything below $800/month.
You have to think whether Haverford is affordable as is, or not.
It sounds like your parents are trying to help you. Talk to them, compute costs together (without the far fetched commuting idea for soph-sr years).
Do you have a job currently? Can you work and earn money now to contribute to college costs?

@milgymfam @StJohnny @Tigerle Thank you for your valuable input! I didn’t factor in the seasons as you guys have accurately pointed out. It seems like transportation and accommodation would be terrible if I were to settle on a budget off-campus option! I will think carefully about it and let you guys know what my final decision is!

@“International Dad” True!!! I think it’s not just about coping with studies but also enjoying quality education. With all the constant worries about finances, will I dare to take the interesting module about anthropology? I think learning for the sake of learning is impt during undergrad (thats why I choose liberal arts education haha). I will need to think over it and see if I can actually isolate my concerns and prioritize on what I want in school haha

@MYOS1634 My current calculation assumes that I work from now till school starts (which I am already doing now). In fact, I would believe that my estimated financial contribution for Haverford would drop in the next few years as my younger brothers enter college and polytechnic. My family expenses would only increase and my parents’ income would only decrease from next year onwards so if nothing goes wrong, my EFC would decrease and I should be able to afford college a little more comfortable. At the very least, I don’t think I will need to scrimp and save and should be able to stay on-campus. But the above discussion is under the assumption of the worst-case scenario that I don’t get better financial aid.
