Haverford--Is it the Right Place for Pre-Med?

Haverford is very strong in the sciences. We have the only professor within the National Academy of Sciences who teaches at a Liberal Arts College in the physics department. We ranked recently #13 among ALL universities and colleges in the USA who send people into science PhD programs, many of whom end up at top universities afterwards.

Your son will definitely get a great education. One thing to note, though, is that the College strives to teach its students to THINK rather than to simply learn. This is definitely the right reason to go to college, but one should realize early on that the College won’t train you ace the MCATS–you’ll have to do that yourself and I think people realize it too late sometimes. It will train you to think and analyze, but the curriculum is not designed to make you do well on standardized exams.

Getting into professional schools requires planning as soon as you get to college, and luckily Haverford gives guidance on how to do so. Just plan to study a bit on the side for how to take the standardized exams (same process as SATs, really) and you’ll do great!
