Haverford Science and FA and social life and internationals

Hi people! I’m an international (Singapore) girl interested in Chem Major. I had a few questions. Though I’ve heard of H before, this is the first time I’m investigating the possibility of applying there.

About Science

 • What’s science at Haverford like? Are the classes rigorous?
 • What about undergraduate research opportunities (UROPs)? Are they prevalent? Are the profs great at guiding?
 • How many go on to PhD / industry?
 • What’s the core classes for Haverford?

About the social life

 • What’s the neighbourhood like? College town?
 • How’s the dating scene ^^;;
 • How’s the housing? Good/bad? Crammed? Familial? Etc.
 • Are there themed dorms?

About Internationals

 • How good is FA for intels? Are they considered for NeedBased?
 • How many are awarded?
 • How’s the accessibility to travel home? Shuttles to airport, nearby international airport, etc?

About programmes

 • How is the study abroad/exchange run at H? Do many students take it up? Where to? Does International FA cover it?
 • How can I be involved in Comm Service at Haverford?

To put in context, here’s a quick rundown of my stats:

 • 2360 SAT (1600 CR+M)
 • 800 Subject Tests (MathIIC, Physics, Chem)
 • 5 on APs (Bio, Chem, Calc AB, Calc BC, Physics B, Physics C, Stats)
 • International Chem Olympiad Bronze
 • 300 hours comm service (zoo, tutoring)
 • Model UN + Journalism

Fiona,
D1 graduated from Haverford back in May with department honors in chem. She applied to and was recruited by USC, Johns Hopkins…and is now a grad student at Boston College. I believe another classmate is now attending Stanford. During her undergrad, she received 2 paid summer research internships on campus. D1 also TA’d organic chem, tutored a local high school student and inner city students who were bussed in during the weekends. Because seniors are required to write a thesis, she bypassed studying abroad in order to get a head start. She enjoyed her time at H. Neighborhood is suburban…pretty and safe. Hope this gives some info to start…
