Having to take elective credits with no point

Does anyone else have to take x amount of credits in electives nowhere near your major? I’m doing engineering and I have to have some credits in arts and humanities, but not just any class, you must pick from a list of 15ish classes none of which interest me. Doesn’t that take away the point of electives? I also have to choose one of 10 classes in social and behavioral studies. I don’t care about that kind of subject matter, I just can’t believe I have to pay 300+ dollars to take a class that has nothing to do with my major and that does not interest me whatsoever. What do you guys think?

Luckily my AP credits can eliminate the historical perspective credits which also don’t interest me but are required

Next year I’ll have to choose between some feminist class or Urban History to satisfy a diversity gen ed. class

That’s the point of getting a Liberal Arts education: to make you a well rounded person.

Suck it up and take the easy A, your GPA will thank you.

Shouldn’t have gone to a liberal arts college. Being familiar with different subjects is kind of the point of going to an LAC.

I’m not at a LAC. Just a pretty large state university

he didn’t go to a LAC. LAC don’t even have engineering programs most of the time (those poor, deprived hippies). Every engineer is forced to take Humanities and Social Sciences during their time in college. Just deal with it. I know its pointless but what are you going to do? Take them pass fail if you want. They are just easy GPA boosters while you are taking the weed out courses like Calc 2.

At UWashington we have these “Areas of Knowledge” gen ed requirements we need to fulfill. I wasn’t very excited about it, (comp sci major here) but they’re nice to pair with harder classes to balance my schedule. For example, I’ll probably take microecon (ECON 200) when I take two 400 level courses or something.

I guess, just make the best of it. Figure out if theres anything remotely interesting. If not, find out which ones have least time commitment involved and are east 4.0s. =)

At my university we have to do the same, but each area has a pretty big list of options so it doesn’t feel so pointless. I am taking an econ class next semester that works for my minor and also counts as behavioral science.

I agree. I hate the stupid BS science and math classes us dumb liberal art majors have to take. Oh well, I’ll take the easy 4.0s :).

^ Ironically I had the highest grade in my stats class last semester–as an English major. That was probably the point when I most strongly felt I had to transfer schools.

Some of my favorite classes have been those elective classes “without a point.” One of my best friends ended up switching majors because she was pushed out of her comfort zone and ended up loving it MUCH more than what she was doing previously.

I firmly believe that these requirements are great. I’ve taken some dumb, BS classes that I hated, of course, but when I actually commit to the class and learn it with as much zeal as I would my major classes, the classes have been very valuable.

^ or you just take it pass/fail, half ass it, and don’t let it get in the way of your real classes
