having trouble deciding between potential majors/minors

i’ll be an incoming freshmen in the fall, and as hard as i have tried to narrow things down, i’m still down to:

neuroscience major, music minor
neuroscience major, philosophy minor
chemistry major, music minor
chemistry major, philosophy

i intend to go to medical school.

neuroscience seems like a pretty cool field, and i have a genuine interest in the brain and the nervous system, but at the same time, i love everything about chemistry.

as far as music goes, i’ve been self-taught on the guitar for a while now, and i’d like to use college as a means of gaining formal training and a better knowledge of theory, etc. pomona gives free music lessons, but if i could learn music theory, composition, and instruction in the classroom regularly, all while holding ANOTHER major/minor, then i don’t think i’d take this as a minor at all. would that be possible to take these classes?

to me, philosophy would be more enriching as far as enhancing my critical thinking skills go, and while i think it would complement the above mentioned majors, i really would like to learn more to the technical side of music. My fear is that if I minor in something else, I won’t have time to take music-related courses.

in all, if it were possible to, say major in neuroscience/chem, minor in philosophy while taking those muisc courses, then that would be ideal. i think there’s a 5 class max. for pomona, though. is it possible?

I learned that it is best to plan college one semester at a time. As long as you keep your options open, you can still decide later whether you want to major in chemistry or neuroscience and minor in philosophy or music. Maybe you don’t want to take more chemistry after orgo or maybe the professors in the chemistry department will be so awesome that you don’t want to take any other courses. Maybe you will find philosophy to be too reading and writing intensive, or maybe one or two courses in music theory will be sufficient to satisfy your interests.

Both the chemistry and the neuroscience major require math and general chemistry, so these would be good courses to take in your first semester. I think you have to take a critical inquiry seminar, and you could add philosophy as your 4th course and a quarter-credit individual instruction course in music.

u should minor in chemistry and major in neuroscience, they both fall under the science category! but u should wait until ur a upcoming junior, u might just find another category to add to your list ^_^
