My favorite National Park to visit… HI has been through a lot lately. Time to say “hi.” Off to book travel!
We were in that area in 1989 — there are slow moving active lava flows nearby, and we were able to see one going into the ocean at night. It was unforgettable. Hopefully everyone in these neighborhoods will heed the evacuation warnings. It sounds like there have been small earthquakes almost non-stop over the past day or so, which you would presume would convince everyone to evacuate.

I have family just east of Volcano (Eden Roc, 7 miles due east of the current flow) and was there in January with my friend and (adult) D hiking the volcano. The Big Island was once my home, so I have a very special spot for it in my heart. So far, everyone there (that I know) is taking this in stride. But yes, safety first, and here’s to Madame Pele being kind as she does what she needs to do.

@HImom is in Oahu, so she shoul be OK. The vog unfortunately will be an issue for a while, so that might affect her and others with breathing issues. 
Fortunately none of our close friends nor family live near the erupting volcano. So far, we have not had emissions blown toward our island.
It will likely be bad for the folks in the Big Island. They did have mandatory evacuation and so far have only heard of property damage.
Yes, I and most of our state’s population live on Oahu. We have no active volcanos on our island but folks do have more breathing problems when the wind blows from the Big Island toward our island if Oahu. The ERs and lung docs have all noticed this.
I live on the Big Island, on the opposite side from the eruption. The vog is normal. The mandatory evacuation affects a small area and a small population. The area where this happened has very cheap real estate because an eruption that will take out homes is likely. Mainland news sources are making it sound like a reason to panic. Local residents are not panicking. The volcano has been erupting continuously for decades and has been erupting almost continuously for recorded history. This new eruption is not unexpected.
My husband is a Kona boy. He is excited about the news but not worried about his HS classmates at all.
@bouders My mother-in-law was affected by vog so much she developed breathing problem. Her doctor told her to stop drinking red(?) wines and that made her so miserable. They eventually followed us to WA and her breathing problem went away almost immediately!!
@HiToWaMom The vog really depends on where on the island you live (as I’m sure you know). My eyes and nose get a little runny with a lot of vog, but my respiratory system is much happier here than when I lived on the mainland. I used to get sinus infections/laryngitis/flu , etc etc frequently. I haven’t had any of that since moving here.
So much depends on the individual. I am fine with small amounts of vog and generally the support group patients notice and complain before it bugs me. I do try to limit my active time outdoors when it gets very bad.
My in-laws used to live in Ocean View area of the Big Island.
I wish we could be booking travel. I love watching the lava at Volcanoes NP. HI is one state that has tempted us to move, but the COL is quite high comparatively and it’s so far away from everywhere else that we will probably pick the Caribbean instead (in a couple of years).
It makes total sense to me that the locals aren’t stressed from this (with exception of those who bought the cheap property and now have to worry). It’s a big island in reality as well as in the name. I’m kinda glad the press has caught wind though - it makes it easier to see pictures!
