Hazing is not just for frats/sororities I guess

Last year, I ran across this story about Cornell’s glee club. Not quite hazing, but would probably fall under a similar issue of leadership creating emotional harm for… fun? There’s almost no positive outcome from it.

That leader is on such a crazy power trip, wow….The ā€œsick bayā€ thing really ticks me off. Coming to work or school when infectious is not OK and can cause SERIOUS harm to others. ARGH. don’t get me going on perfect-attendance awards

I do understand the need to instill a sense of responsibility, but it seems he took it way too far.

Not that it should be allowed, but it feels like this ā€œhazingā€ was extremely mild compared to previous cases that have resulted in disciplinary action. I feel like suspending the orch may have been a bit much.

  • upperclassmen blindfolded them, took them outside, and walked them up and down a hill before returning to the rehearsal space in a barn.
  • While blindfolded, new members were asked to tap upperclassmen once to be given water, or twice to be given a shot of vodka, according to three HRO members.
  • The whole club then exchanged notes, with new members sharing their hopes and fears at the start of college and upperclassmen offering advice.

I suspect the reasoning that it was classified as hazing was that the students were blindfolded and didn’t know what was going to happen and could freak out..the other thing is the alcohol, with the drinking age at 21 and these being freshman likely, they might have felt like that offering was a problem even if kids had the choice, that they might feel compelled to take the alcohol shot.

Obviously this is pretty mild, to say the least, but in the current climate anything like this is ill advised for any group to do. I honestly think they could have warned the group and other organizations that it may be wise to avoid anything like this. Having been head of an student activies board years ago, where we handled discipline cases including hazing, to me the penalty didn’t fit the crime. I am glad they are taking hazing seriously but I think this was overkil.
