Hazing is Still an Issue

as an interesting aside, my D24 is in her final 1/4 semester of health (in NJ, 4 semesters of PE are required, and each year one marking period is for health ed). Typically, health has covered the usual suspects (sex, alcohol and drug use, mental health concerns). The sr. year curriculum covers hazing
this is definitely a change since my D20 was in high school.

This is related to a past issue - but new kid.

It’s horrible/crazy how this stuff happens but I am a bit perturbed that the student went to another school and joined the same frat. If I was a juror (I couldn’t be), that’s credibility losing.

This thread probably should not be listed under “Northwestern University” as many other schools are discussed with practices far more egregious than anything that is alleged to have happened among NU football players.

The topic of hazing is an important issue worthy of discussion, but the category should be under something like “college life” rather than a specific school (unless discussion is restricted to topic related matters at that particular college or university).

didn’t even see that - agreed. Or perhaps a new hazing thread could be started and those non related moved over?

I agree it seems strange that this student who was so traumatized by a fraternity joined ANY frat at his new school, but really two chapters can be entirely different. I bet he had some connection to Sigma Chi, like a father or brother is a member. But really, why even rush again?

One thing I found unbelievable is that ‘while the sock was still in his mouth, he was forced to drink vodka until he puked.’ It would seem pretty hard to drink with two socks in your mouth. It is little things like this that have me questioning other parts of the pleading. Same with the “Jackie” article from The Rolling Stone/UVa. One part of the story was that she was taken to a bedroom, crashed through a glass coffee table shattering glass all over the floor, and then 7 men raped her as she was on the floor and no one was cut by glass on their knees or her on her back. I would have thought there would be blood everywhere. That made me question the whole article, and of course it turned out the article was all fabricated.

Analogous to questioning how a victim of date rape could go out on another date. I think this is a form of victim blaming and is wrong.

Of course I agree with challenging “true” inconsistencies but a student pledging a second frat in anticipation of being treated humanely doesn’t seem to invalidate their claims of mistreatment previously.

I’m not victim blaming. I would think that someone who was date raped might be very scared to go out on another date and not do it until he/she was ready, when therapy had moved to a point where she felt safe, and I think it would be reasonable to choose not to date someone with the same name. This law suit reads as if the terror is ongoing and new. Joining a second frat (and really this is the same one) seems, to me, to be engaging in an activity that is optional AT THIS TIME. Also, since it is a different chapter of the same frat, he’d be pledging to be loyal to the same national group of brothers and paying the same group he is suing. I’d think just hearing the name Sigma Chi over and over would be triggering, writing the checks with that name on it, going to conventions where he might run into the members from U of Charleston.

I’m a big proponent of Greek Life, but I wouldn’t send my traumatized kid back to it. There are other ways to socialize on campus.

I hadn’t realized so many NU football players had filed hazing lawsuits, the article linked below says it’s up to 25. Article also includes this :exploding_head::

Plaintiffs in the lawsuits include former linebacker Nathan Fox (SESP ’19) and the anonymous former player who first reported the hazing to the University and spoke to ArentFox Schiff attorney Maggie Hickey during the independent investigation. The lawsuits list new allegations against the team and coaching staff, one of which details how Fox told at least six NU employees — including several mental health professionals — about the hazing years prior to Hickey’s investigation.

According to the lawsuit, Fitzgerald looked directly at Fox during a team meeting and accused him of “bitching and moaning to (his) therapists about not playing and having unfair treatment” after a therapist allegedly urged Fox to waive his confidentiality rights and Fox agreed to it.

Fox alleges that a therapist at NU told him the hazing was not “real” but instead a symptom of depressive bipolar disorder, prescribing him medication that caused serious side effects including mental fogginess, sleep paralysis, memory loss and suicidal thoughts.

The alleged sexual harassment activity is detailed in an NU student newspaper article dated July 8, 2023. If accurate as described, these are weird, stupid practices designed to embarrass and humiliate players who made mistakes during practice.

Yes, that article is the link in the OP of this thread.

ETA: Upon re-reading that article and the new one today, I am also gobsmacked that after Fitz was fired he was allowed to volunteer as a private HS football coach at his kids’ school.

It happens in women’s sports. This is an older story.

Tragic. Will be difficult for that community for a while, especially the soph class which is on campus for the summer.

This is the really crazy part as it’s not a big school.

And this part:

““We aren’t able to provide details on an ongoing investigation, but we can say that at the time of the incident, Beta Alpha Omega was on alcohol probation following a fall-, winter- and spring-term suspension. Alpha Phi was placed on alcohol probation during the fall 2023 term and then returned to good standing,” Kelly added.”

And this part:

Seventy-three percent of students in US fraternities and sororities experienced what they called some form of hazing at least once, according to a University of Maine study released in 2008, the most recent available for such research.

Do they have statistics for all college students at a residential college? Dorm hazing, marching band, sports teams?

My niece is a member of the same sorority as I am (about 35 years younger than me). I asked her if she knew some of the songs and she said no, requiring learning songs is a form of hazing! Really? It is one of my fondest memories. They have no skits, no songs, no waking up pledges to get ice cream at 3 am. We thought these things were fun, but I guess I was hazed every day I was in college with the songs and skits and heave forbid we went out for ice cream.

At girl scout camp too.

I think when most think of hazing - it’s related to alcohol or drug related or sexual stuff or forced things that would be against a normal person’s acceptance.

I agree learning a song is not hazing.

But obviously there are issues out there and people are dying.

Honestly, when I think of Dartmouth, I think of the Psychology sex scandal - which wasn’t from an organized group but rather Professors who you’d think would be the last people to traumatize or injure students.

Maybe the school has an overall issue?? It gives me pause although neither of my students had it on their list and obviously many have a wonderful experience there.

Obviously, hazing (and more) are issues at many colleges throughout the country
very scary because I can’t imagine anyone having any expectation of this up front
but it seems like many are unable to escape. And it seems to hit all levels of colleges - not just the perceived party schools.
