you need to find things that son can do where he can not be perfect and there are no “conseqences” - frosting a cake, playing a silly game

at this time, maybe doing some volunteering - working at a food bank, cleaning a beach, something that takes him out of the school realm, where he doesn’t have to “perform”

Had an experience with my youngest son who suddenly in 7th grade began getting Bs and some Cs after getting almost all As his entire grade school career. He is very social and both the teachers and I thought he wasn’t trying hard enough with socializing being more important to him.
He started high school and was getting Ds on tests that his brothers said he were really easy tests.
Long story short, the wonderful Learning center teacher suggested evaluation for a learning disability which he has. He is getting help now. It showed up late because he is very intelligent and was able to compensate for a long time.
I am not saying your son has this problem, but many times it really helps to get an outside opinion and advice.
