HE Top load washer advice needed

Glad to hear you’re pleased with them, sb. Which model washer do you have, wbow? I did some reading on that brand this afternoon after seeing a few plugs for it here.

My washer is MVWB850WL and dryer is MEDB850WL

[Maytag: Washers MVWB850WL](http://www.maytag.com/catalog/product.jsp?cat=18&prod=2229)
[Maytag: Dryers MEDB850WL](http://www.maytag.com/catalog/product.jsp?cat=17&prod=2225)

Wow, I love them! Use them well. If my 8 year old W/D gives me any trouble, I am getting the same ones as Snowball! I was thinking either silver or black.

I have a Whirlpool top loader and a Whirlpool front loader. If I had to choose between the two, I would opt for the top loader. No question. The front loader is better for delicates and small loads, and the lack of an agitator is easier on the clothes, but it can’t handle towels, sheets and large loads.

Also, the cycle times for the front loader are significantly longer.

I switched to a Kenmore HE front loader in 2001 (one of the first model years) and will not go back to a top loader. I do not understand some of the comments. What’s the big deal about leaving the door open? I do it and have never noticed any mold problems. As for large loads, we can cram HUGE loads into it. Sheets, towels, comforters, whatever. Maybe Gourmetmom’s Whirlpool is a smaller unit. For machines of equal dimensions, front loaders have the capacity advantage (no agitator). They conserve water, electricity and detergent, they are gentler on clothes (no agitator), they are quieter (until you put them on high spin that is).

Best of all, they are far more entertaining for the cat to watch.

My top loader does all of the above and is larger than the front loaders on the market. I did not have the room to leave my washer door opened, so a front loader was out of the question for me.

Your cat would love sitting on the top of my washer and watching through the glass top!!

my top loader has all of the above features as well. but having a top loading dryer is the best. i can open the washer, and toss things right into the dryer. no bending, no twisting, no digging around the washer looking for anything stuck up on top.

this is really the best of both worlds for me–i will never go back to any other washer/dryer arrangement.

the top loading dryer is the cat’s meow.

I have a front loader, and I keep the door ajar as is recommended, but honestly, I don’t like it. I think it’s a sloppy look, it looks like I forgot to close the door, and a design flaw that they didn’t get circulation in it through another means.

Okay, I have had to cancel all my plans today while I sit home and wait for the washing machine repair guy to come. My 8+ year old Whirlpool Calypso is leaking from the bottom during or just before the spin cycle. I am spending my idle time looking at new whirlpool cabrios and maytag bravos (because the Fisher Paykil is too small). Any new thoughts?

Whatever you do, do NOT repair the Callypso if the repair costs are over $100. There was a reason the model was nicknamed “The Collapso”.

Take a look at Miele frontloaders. I will post the model number in a minute - I have to get my king sized comforter out of my washer and load my silk shirts and undies.

Added:

My frontloader is model W 4840. Super capacity, never a stinky smell, handles anything from comforters to lace. You can wash one piece of underwear or stuff it with towels.

H who sits next to me on the sofa says, “Tell them to cancel the appointment and get a new washer!”

I don’t have room for a front loader in my narrow laundry room. The repair guy just left, without fixing the machine. He will call me on Monday with an estimate of how much it will cost to fix this machine but advised me to purchase an new washer (since he believes the fix will be in the hundreds of dollars). I am going shopping.

I’m still very happy with the Marytag Bravos – and I’ve had it over a year now!

seician - FWIW I had the same problem with my Kenmore Elite (which may be a whirlpool product … I don’t really know). The source of the problem was a broken outlet on the washer drain pump. A quarter had slid underneath that large plastic thing at the bottom of the washer and got lodged in the drain pump, breaking the plastic outlet. Simple fix … $150 for the part plus the install charge. Hopefully your problem is an even cheaper fix!

Pizzagirl, I just place a small wash cloth between the door and the machine so that it doesn’t close all the way. It looks almost closed. My parents always did this with their washer in Florida that was in the garage. No mildew.

New Hope, there was a Kenmore clone of the Callypso. We had one of them. I refused to pay more than $300 to fix an almost 8-yr old washer that had been plagued by recalls (somehow ours lived much longer than the average 2 year lifespan of that model, so we were conveniently omitted from the recall list).
seiclan, it is too bad you do not have space for a frontloader. The toploader choices are pretty limited if you want to find something that is similar to your Callypso (no agitator).

Okay, the repair guy says to get a new washer because the fix is not worth it. I am going to get the one that Snowball has (Maytag Bravos MVWB850WL). The only problem is that all the stores around here have to order it as no one has it in stock!!! We may be without a washer for up to three weeks! I don’t know if I can deal with that. Trying to decide between purchasing at Lowes vs. Best Buy. Best Buy has them on sale today for $250 less and Lowe’s is willing to match the price but…the Lowe’s extended protection plan for both the washer and dryer for 4 years after the warranty expires costs $159 (wonderful…includes parts and in house labor). The Best Buy warranty is $449 for 5 years (really four since it starts day one). Best Buy’s online website says they can deliver it on Saturday, Feb 20 but Lowe’s says not until March 12th. I called Lowe’s and they said that they cannot confirm delivery date until Tuesday because no one will be at the Maytag wharhouse until then (Holiday tomorrow). He said that Best Buy gets theirs from same place so he dosen’t know why they are saying they can get it to me any sooner. ARRGH

I see you are in South Florida; do you have a BrandsMart near you? That is where I got mine, and they had them in stock in all colors. If there isn’t one in your city, might they deliver to your area?

I believe my extended warranty was like $99 for 3 additional years, but you can always negotiate the price at BrandsMart on the appliance as will as the warranty. I also received a manufacturer rebate for my washer and dryer of $150, plus their price was cheaper than Lowes.

Here are the locations in Florida: [BrandsMart USA - Florida Store Locations](<a href=“Buy top brand TVs, Home Appliances, Washers, Dryers & more | BrandsMartUSA”>Buy top brand TVs, Home Appliances, Washers, Dryers & more | BrandsMartUSA)

Done. I bought the washer and dryer at Lowe’s. Thank you Snowball, they do have them for the same price at Brandsmart as I could get at Lowes BUT I feel more comfortable dealing with the Lowe’s Extended Protection Plan than one from Brandsmart. Since the machines are currently on sale at Best Buy and I brought the printout over to Lowe’s, they were able to match the price. Lowe’s also has free delivery, set-up and haul away (of the old machines) which makes Lowe’s the cheapest (Brandsmart had a delivery fee as did Best Buy) after all was said and done. I ended up saving about $500 off the MSRP. I paid $959 for the washer and $879 for the dryer, plus $159 for a comprehensive 4 year (after the manufacturer’s warranty expires) extended protection plan. It covers total parts and labor, in home service, power surge protection (from day of purchase), and a no lemon guarantee (replacement if the product requires more than 3 repairs for the same problem). Also, it is transferable at no charge (should we move or sell the machines). The only issue is that I cannot get my new machines until March 1st but, my neighbor, an empty nester with grown children, has offered me the use of her machines until my new ones arrive. Whew. Hope all goes well with delivery, set up etc. I am cyked for new machines! Thanks everyone for your input and expertise.

check to see if your state is participating in a rebate program for appliance ‘clunkers’. You might get a rebate for purchasing an energy saver washer - Consumer Reports refers readers to [Energy Savers: Rebates for ENERGY STAR Appliances](http://www.energysavers.gov/rebates) and ConsumerReports.org.

We just got a top loading GE and love it. I like being able to open the door to throw something else in, it didn’t break the bank and it’s very spacious. Previous washer was 13 years old (also a GE). I’ve noticed the wrinkling, but the dryer seems to sort it out. I do like to hang out laundry in the summer, so don’t know whether wrinkling will be a problem.

I’m back! My new Maytag Bravos (lunar silver) washer and dryer were delivered/installed yesterday (after a 3+ week wait)!!! Snowball - I didn’t realize that every time you open the washer or dryer door, a song/chime goes off. Do you know if there is a way to shut it off?? I saw that you can silence the end of cycle chimes but what about the door one?

I did three loads of laundry yesterday and so far, looks good. The dryer dries quicker than my whirlpool senseon did. The washer is quieter on the spin cycle than my old whirlpool calypso, which used to sound like a helicopter taking off. This washer has different operating noises (almost sounds like a fine machine shifting gears) that I will need to get used to but they are not too loud. I haven’t bought the Affresh cleaner but I may try it (as opposed to using bleach to clean the washer once a month).
