I have not figured out how to turn the chimes off; annoying at first, but you get use to it! When I first hear the chimes, I went nuts, but it doesn’t bother me anymore.

I do use the Affresh and it is nice that the machine reminds you when it is time.

If you have plastic laundry baskets, do not leave them on the top of the dryer; for some reason it really scratches the top. I guess my baskets are rough on the bottom, and with the dirt the dogs bring into the laundry room there must be too much grit. The scratches are noticeable on the red machine.

Thanks for the heads up on the scratch potential of the dryer top. I fold onto of the dryer and will definitely be careful not to put my plastic laundry basket on the dryer now. I have the silver and it is very pretty (and I wouldn’t want to scratch it up). I haven’t changed any factory settings and was wondering if you had good luck with any custom combinations? For instance, when doing a large load of mixed dark wash, including a few pairs of jeans, is it better to wash them on the darks/color wash or on normal but adjust the temperature to cold/cold? Should they spin at medium or will that wrinkle the jeans too much?

I mix the setting and it took some time to figure out what clothes needed what setting. I actual do my and my daughter’s knits top and underwear on the color/towel setting; the hand wash setting didn’t clean well at all for items that didn’t need hand wash. I do towels on the white setting, and most everything else on normal. The spin at medium does wrinkle the jeans; I hang dry the jeans of the females and throw them in the dryer for about 2 minutes and them smooth them out. If you are drying jeans in the dryer, the medium setting will work just fine.

This machine does have a learning curve that I still am working on!

Okay, I am not near the laundry room but will try this tomorrow…I just may have found the answer on the Maytag website on how to turn off the door chimes.

Here it is:

Question
Can I turn off the button tones on my Bravos® washer?
Answer

Yes, you can turn off the tones the washer makes when you open the lid or touch the controls. The controls will still light up when you open the lid or touch the controls.

To turn off the tones:

Touch any button or open the door to activate the controls. Hold the End Signal button for 5 seconds, all valid tones will be eliminated. This does not turn off the three short tones that occur when invalid selection is made.

hello…we have a top loading Whirlpool Calypso, a few years old, and I have to get it replaced now. The problem I am having, accdng. to repairman, is transmission motor oil leaking. i.e. white and light colored clothes are getting black oil streaks (which can’t be removed!) and he said it was caused by oil leakage from the transmission. Makes no sense to repair as too costly. So I guess I’m going to have to figure out what to buy, too! :)

I am reviving this thread (even though there have been several other washing machine threads in the meantime) because I posted (page 2) how pleased I was with the Whirlpool Cabrio I bought 2 summers ago… Well, an update that I am no longer pleased. It’s less than two years old and the repairman I had to call today told me that the bearing is rusted, the bearing seal is leaking, and I need a new outer tub. $300+ repair. It’s less than two years old and rusted out??? I do a lot of laundry, but not that much laundry! Of course it’s out of warranty. This seems crazy. I am in mourning for my old Maytag that lasted me over 20 years. :(

Interesting to see this thread revived. I recently bought the top loading HE no agitator Maytag model. So far, I love it! The noise it does/doesn’t make is not really a factor - it’s in the basement so it can make all the noise it wants! Love the size. Like another poster said, I don’t really notice a wrinkling problem - but do notice the clothes are SO much dryer when the wash cycle finishes! So yes, any wrinkles are a non-issue when I dry them. Things I hang up to dry - I always once dry, put them in the dryer on no heat for a few minutes anyway.

Guitarists’s Mom,
I started one of the recent top loader threads- I am horrified at you story— TWO only TWO years!! Yikes…
Good to know,
What are you planning next?

yes, Whirlpool bought Maytag awhile back, so now I don’t trust Maytag either.

I don’t mind the noise that much (although we have to shut the door and turn up the TV) but the repair guy said it is only a matter of time before it starts leaking and will not work. So that I WILL mind. I have always been fine with the way it cleans the clothes and can handle bulky loads, but I am disgusted that these companies make these appliances with so much less durability than the “olden days.” They have nothing to lose, they make money on repairs or new sales. I am a little annoyed at my trusty Consumer Reports reviews on this machine as well.

I have been perusing various forums and it seems this is a ridiculously common problem with these washers. Everyone loves them at first and then 18 months-2 years and this issue crops up. Over and over and over again I am reading about this.

I am debating repair (already had to pay the repair guy for a visit, so that gets put toward the cost of repair) or just buying the cheapest machine I can find somewhere and not expecting it to last. I keep reading that people spent the $$ for the repair and then the same problem crops up again after another year or two.

To top it all off, 3 weeks ago I had to replace our range and refrigerator all in the same week. The range was pretty old but the fridge was not. And guess which brand refrigerator I came home with? Yup, Whirlpool. Sigh.

Two college tuition bills due this week. I am graying by the minute.

g’s m:
I so feel your pain! We are having same set of issues- all our appliances were installed about 10 ears ago, and they are gradually all fritzing out this year…
My washer (see my recent thread) seems to be back up to the job, so I am waiting for it to completely expire (Maytag Atlantis 2000)
Right now, I am thinking of the Roper low end model at Lowes… for about $300. Repairs should be very cheap on such a low-tech model LOL, and the only reason why I care if is does not last more than three years is I hate to junk-dump all that metal into the environment…

Keep us up on how you move forward!
Good luck (and I would wait for it to totally fritz- you never know with these repairmen- my trusty guy wanted over $400 to replace the transmission on mine because parts are supposedly not around anymore since the model has been discontinued [typical-]… needed a special $350 tool… hmmm) LOL

i think i have had them for about 4 years…still working great! i love the top loading dryer–makes it so easy to move towels, jeans and other heavy things from the washer to the dryer…
