Headshot?

I just had a new headshot taken (the one I used for my LinkedIn profile was starting to look really dated).

I used a photographer I found via Google. I’m waiting for the photos (then I’ll choose 2 shots and he’ll retouch them). It’s funny – I am not a professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I think 10 different photographers would see the same person 10 different ways. In other words, the “me” in my head may not be the “me” he photographed.

A dear friend told me her friend just had hers done - she got very natural looking photos – relaxed, laughing. I realize I should have told him I wanted something like that. I think earlier in my career I was too afraid to be “me” so I went for corporate neutral, and he may have seen that shot and assumed I wanted the same.

Anyone have any tips for finding a photographer and getting a good headshot done? My business partner (male) is perfectly happy with the cellphone photo of him against a blank wall. I keep telling him it’s all about the lighting and camera angle.

You might look at wedding photographers in your area, they often do senior pictures and therefore ought to be able to do a nice adult headshot yet add that special something to make the photo really appealing

Facebook is a great place to see photos of people in your area getting married and then you can friend that photographer who may post weekly samples.

There are lots of good photographers around … you just have to look for them. I agree with you 100% that each photographer will “see” you differently.

Somemom – that’s a great idea! I didn’t think of that – thanks :)

NewHope33 – I am realizing you’re right – I need to check out a few and see if we click.

Ask on the Musical Theatre forum and let them know where you’re located. There’s likely to be someone who can recommend a photographer who specializes in headshots. Not all photographers do a good job at this.

The best pics I have of myself were taken outdoors with plants as the background. If you are looking for good headshot photographers, find a musician, actor/actress or dancer in the area and see who they use!

Definitely find someone in your area who does headshots for actors, musicians, etc. This is a real specialty. My D had a friend, who is a talented amateur photograph, take headshots for her. She recently got an agent who told her the headshots wouldn’t do at all and sent her to someone who did this kind of work. The first photos weren’t bad–most people would say they were great, but the difference between the first set and the second set was astounding. I’d second the recommendations above to find photographer who specializes in this type of work.
