Health care availability at HMC ..

Anybody would like to share some experiences - i.e. after they/some body known fell sick?

There is the campus health center shared by the 5Cs. Open during the week when school is in session. I think there is a small copay for walk-ins, free for most things if you have an appointment. If they can’t handle what you have, they can help you find a doctor nearby. Like most college health centers, they do stuff like appointments when you have a cough, birth control, initial mental health visits, etc. My kid has walked or Ubered to nearby specialists, too.

There is an urgent care center within walking distance of campus. If the health center is closed or you are on campus over the summer, you might use that. My kid got an infected cut one summer, and broke her arm falling off her freelines another summer, so she has been there a few times.

Campus security also does basic first aid, and can help determine if an ER visit is a good idea. And they will call an ambulance if necessary, of course. They have even helicopter evacuated in the past in a real emergency.

Claremont isn’t rural, you can get most any needed health services nearby.

Here is a link to the health center info: http://www.cuc.claremont.edu/shs/

No personal experiences of yet to share.

Is there a specific question you have or reason for the question?

Great information, thanks a lot.

I was talking to a parent who had attended last year’s HMC orientation. She was saying that she had asked questions about health care to some body & as a result she was not very impressed with that aspect of HMC. She herself is educated at Duke (which has a medical school) & she had good things to say about Duke.

Some research universities have hospitals associated with the campus. I remember going to the U of Michigan hospital ER once. It was not close to my dorm, I had to take a cab. They prescribed a drug I was allergic to. Campus health service straightened it out a day later. I wouldn’t pick a college based on the fact they have a hospital unless you have some complex medical condition that requires regular visits that a typical hospital can’t handle. There are also 2 hospitals within 5 miles of campus – my kid hasn’t needed them, but would go if she needed a hospital.

If you limit a college search based on whether the have a medical school, your selection will be very limited (and LACs will definitely be out).

Since we don’t know what the questions (or the answers) were, it is hard for us to respond.

I will add this-- I know a parent who expressed gratitude for how supportive the faculty, staff and other students were to their S when he became sick and had to miss several classes.

I myself don’t know the whole conversation which made me feel concerned. I am some what reassured by your comments
