Health professional mentoring program

How competive is it to get in this program?

How many people are in the program each year?

  • How many MAKE it in the med school?

  • How difficult and rigorous is it to manage the HPM activities?

  • How does this program help besides the traditional program ( req info apart from their website )

  • Any preferrence for HPM students to Miller
-Are there any other reasons HPM students don’t matriculate?

@WayOutWestMom any ideas?

How competive is it to get in this program?

Competitive to highly competitive. The program is invitation only and the program is vague about how applicants are selected. (Note: academic achievement is only one part of the selection criteria.)

How many people are in the program each year?

The University does not disclose this information. You can ask the pre-health advising office at UM to see if they will answer this question.

Unknown.

No. Miller SOM uses a holistic scoring method to winnow the applicants during the second round of review. (First round winnowing is done by a computer algorithm.) Although the quality of undergrad institution an applicant attends is considered, no points are specifically awarded for graduating from UM or the HPM program.

All the usual reasons, including a poor mission-fit for a particular med school, an entitled attitude, and too many applicants for too few seats.

any advantage to joining this program vs BSDO program.

If the BSDO program has an admission guarantee (not NSU, for example) AND you are Ok with being a DO, then the BSDO is the better option.

Just be aware that there are disadvantages to going DO. DO schools offer less exposure to academic hospitals, fewer research opportunities, requirements for OMT training, and the necessity of taking 2 different sets of national board exams (USMLE and COMLEX).

yes considering NSU BSDO vs Umiami HPM program..?

I am trying to weigh in if Umiami HPM program will give me an edge for MD admissions vs NSU BSDO

Neither UM’s HPM nor NSU BSDO program offers any guarantees w/r/t med school admission. NSU’s BSDO offers a conditional acceptance the DO school and reputedly has quite a high wash-out rate.

The BSDO program will not help you with admission to a MD program at all.
