Health Science Graduate Programs that Accept Students with Low Undergrad GPAs???

I am looking to apply to Masters/PhD programs in the health sciences (Neuroscience, Physiology, etc…) but I have a very low undergraduate GPA (2.78). My brother died suddenly when I was just finishing my freshman year of college, so it greatly inhibited my ability to focus on my academics or to enjoy any aspect of my life.

I have a ton of volunteer experience in the University Hospital, and interned in an Otolaryngology lab for 3 years, so as far as other qualifications are concerned, I feel confident.

Could someone please give me some insight into some programs that might be more open to accepting a “non-traditional” student with a low GPA?

You will not likely find any Ph.D programs willing to take you right away, but you can pursue a master’s degree and then apply for doctoral study. Your best bet is to find schools that don’t have hard GPA cutoffs. Browse grad school/program Web sites for admissions requirements.

Be aware that your GPA will be a stumbling block when competing for funding.

Do you at least have an upward trend? Some schools only consider the junior and senior years when calculating GPA.
