"Healthy December" - Keeping On Track To Avoid The January Bandwagon Wellness Pitfall

Shellz, I like the way you think. For me it’s the continuous eating all month long that’s the problem! I am not baking cookies this year. I’m the one who eats them. For me, all the baking is nostalgia for how things used to be, when I had more family to enjoy the cookies with. I felt sad, so I ate the cookies and then I felt even sadder when I gained weight! “Indulging Days” - perfect way to look at it!

I don’t bake- I just eat what everyone else bakes! Today the first business gift arrived- a giant box of gourmet cookies and brownies. I had one cookie and passed the box around my department and then set it out. I might take a few home to my husband, but I’m not all that tempted by these, so I’ll leave the rest at work for the others.

I probably shouldn’t read the last few posts as I’m a little hungry…

I DO bake and will bake. Several kinds. I give plates as gifts for co-workers, neighbors, family, etc. Plus if I didn’t my kids would disown me. I will eat them too! I can moderate pretty good. That’s one thing on my side, I’m not a “stuffer” - I hear about people eating a whole box of Girl Scout cookies in one sitting - that doesn’t appeal to me.

BUT what I need to do is after New Years? Any left over cookies go in the trash or to someone elses house!

Like @shellz, on the day after my fast day I’m not abnormally hungry and I don’t “binge”. But I’ve also never been one of those people who does stuff themselves-if I eat even a little too much I feel very ill and have to lie down for a while,

I just wake up and have breakfast like normal-I don’t feel weirdly hungry.

We finally have decent weather here and I really need to walk the dog. And myself

Post-season tennis party last night, a book club party next week, final exams that week as well. I’m just trying to stay healthy, which is hard when you’re socializing a lot and everyone wants to hug you-I’m like, argh! Don’t breathe on me! I can’t get sick for final exams!

One pitfall that I notice about a lot of stay healthy threads is they devolve into talking about specific foods and recipes, so I’m going to make an effort not to do that.

I am going to go make myself do some yoga today!

Those pet walks are a good way to get some steps, exercise and fresh air in - no matter the temperature. Taking our dog out 3 times a day in non-negotiable - he needs his exercise too! More holiday goodies around and more people visiting in the house might mean that more “treats” get dropped for pup too - weight gain usually not good for them either!

Yesterday’s cookie box was followed today by big boxes of cheese straws- which are really good. A few of them go a long way, fortunately, so it wasn’t a complete ruin to have a couple.

Oh I have not been good at all. I got into the cookies yeasterday a day candy today. Those were in the office Fromm some of our business associates. Then we had a luncheon today and more cookies. I need to stop right now!

I’ve got a solution everyone can get on board with! Everyone stay home from work until January 3!!!

Sounds like the work treats are a killer!

In my office, all treats are isually sent to one floor, and I am not on that floor! Plus, I am going to be off for 2 weeks, so my healthy eating lifestyle is not endangered this holiday season.

We had our work office party yesterday - it’s a low key affair where we close the office early, but there’s a lot of food that’s not so good for you and of course, alcohol. I reminded myself of another party this weekend and only had a few things I really wanted - spiced shrimp, meatballs and chicken strips. No cheese, no crackers, no sweets, no alcohol (that was a big one) - decided that if I wanted alcohol it was going to be something decent that I enjoyed!

Lucky Bunsen being off! I think you’ve likely earned some R&R.

@sabaray YEAH! Love that you still enjoyed some treats…mindfully! Enjoy that good cocktail this weekend. You’ve earned it

This thread is really helpful, @abasket. Of course it matters what we eat all year long, but it’s so easy to just let things slide during the holidays. Having the specific to the holidays accountability is great!

Great job Sabaray. I approve of those choices! We all need to eat - being mindful, making selections (instead of selecting EVERYTHING) and keeping quantity in check is key.

Maybe that’s a tip for today - liquids. Limit or also be mindful of the beverages you choose. One alcohol beverage instead of two. Egg nog but a small serving. Skip the soda for the month so you can enjoy a seasonal beverage instead when the opportunity is there.

I had an “event” on my calendar that I was planning and looking forward to. Our local farmers market - one of the vendors is an AMAZING local donut place (donuts are a top food splurge for me) was going to be doing a fundraiser tomorrow morning at the market with HOT DONUTS and fall beverages. It was on my calendar! Unfortunately or fortunately they announced today they had to cancel due to weather conditions expected. I’ll miss them but I guess the calories can go elsewhere now!

So far so good for me, but I haven’t had too many events that have provided unusual temptation. This weekend will be challenging as we’re travelling to visit S and SIL and will celebrate Christmas early with them (they won’t be home for Christmas this year…sniff, sniff). One minor victory is that I elected to not bake anything to take with us to share. There will be plenty of great food (SIL is an amazing cook!) and while the yummy cookies and treats would have surely gotten eaten, I realized it just isn’t necessary.

abasket - sorry that the donut vendor cancelled. I hate when you are planning on a specific splurge and then it either falls through or else turns out to not be nearly as good as what you had anticipated. I hope you find something else to treat yourself to!

You were all in my head this morning when I was at a meeting with several stations of platters of “better than homemade” Christmas cookies - oodles of varieties. As I picked up the tongs and thought about what I was going to take (who could decide? They all looked good!) I took one, paused at two and put the cookie tongs down. I wasn’t going to be able to try them all so just pick ONE and really enjoy it. I did.

I received a business gift of a cookie tray that was about 2 feet long and a foot wide. Loaded with cookies, chocolates and chocolate covered pretzels. Luckily, I’m still not fully recovered from a virus earlier in the week and none of it appealed to me. My staff dug in, and then we took it down to the bigger break room for our floor. Of course, I did sample some of the things from Day 2 of the 3 day feast on our floor. I have mixed feelings about not having my appetite back yet to enjoy some of these things, but it’s probably just as well.

I indulged in some salt and pepper peanuts at work today. We also received chocolate covered peanuts, chocolate covered potato chips and plain dill pickle chips in giant canisters but I did not indulge in those. I’m having an easier time not snacking this year - the sweet stuff just doesn’t have as much appeal anymore. Of course, no one has sent us donuts yet!

I ate two lunches today. I am doomed.

^^Only for that meal! Pick er right back up @Lizardly !

@sabaray, dill pickle potato chips or dill pickle chips? I’d rather have the latter!

Potato chips, @abasket - there’s a place not far from me that manufactures all types of variety chips - dill pickle, old bay seasoned, super spicy…you name it, they make it. I can do without them. If they were actual pickles, I’d be all over them.
