"Healthy December" - Keeping On Track To Avoid The January Bandwagon Wellness Pitfall

We had a working lunch today and we ordered in ginormous, sloppy sandwiches, chips, and cookies. I had already brought in my little container of cut-up fruit and a Greek yogurt. I was really torn, but in the end, the healthier option won out. Patted myself on the back in honor of my virtuous eating.

@sabaray Charles Chips Dill potato chips?!! I haven’t thought of them in years. They used to deliver the big tins to my work…I’m drooling just thinking of them!

These were a gift tin of Route 11 chips - happily something I can resist!

I love chips of any kind. It’s the crunchy, salty snacks that tempt me, not the sweet ones (though I do crave a little bit of sugar every day). I ONLY eat chips when they come in single-serving bags, however. I would NEVER buy a big bag of chips and I refrain from eating them out of a communal bowl because portion size is so hard to gauge. But just thinking about chips is getting me thinking about walking down to the little store in my office building to get a little bag. There are probably some left-over free ones in the office, but like I said upthread, I don’t take ANY of the free office food (except actual meals at mealtime, and even then, no free dessert at work).

@nottelling Same! Sugar is pretty easy to resist…salty, crunchy snacks are my downfall.

Tip of the day, stolen from my mom. To discourage snacking after dinner (or anytime, really), brush your teeth immediately after the meal. I loathe flossing, so if I’ve done that early in the evening, I am less likely to stick mindless junk in my pie hole. Yes…I hate flossing enough to pass up the late night goodies.

@shellz, I strongly second your mom’s advice. I not only have to brush and floss, but also go through this miserable proxabrush bit that I refuse to do twice in one night. I force myself straight from the dinner table into the dental routine; on the rare occasions that I don’t, desserts have a way of sneaking into my mouth.

I went to See’s Candy today to buy some holiday gifts and stocking stuffers. I may or may not have bought something for myself while there. I now realize I should have come up with other gift ideas that would not have led me into temptation.

Did a haul of Christmas baking the last couple of days. Six varieties of cookies/bars baked so far. BUT didn’t eat a single one yet! That will change I’m sure, but really, after all the baking I’m not tempted to eat right away.

Day 2 out of 3 of work lunch events.

Yesterday, not too bad - I made chicken tortilla soup which was pretty healthy so I focussed on that, salad and a small piece of peppermint chocolate pie.

Today’s event - I brought a chopped salad. Had a couple of meatballs w/out pasta, a little shredded meat w/out bun and splurged on some chocolate cashew bark.

Tomorrow is a lunch out.

There is plenty to grumble about with my new Invisalign braces/retainers, but one good thing is that they really discourage snacking. Take them out, eat, then brush and put them back in.

I’d have that peppermint pie too. Sounds delicious.

I was mildly naughty today. Supposed to have a team lunch that was cancelled - so I ran home for lunch (tomato and roasted red pepper soup) and on the way back to the office got a Starbucks holiday spice flat white. I also ate a ginger cookie at the office. But, I had a healthy breakfast, light lunch, exercised and walked the dogs. I guess I could have gotten a plain coffee but I probably would have eaten quite a few more of those cookies!

Yoooo hooooo! Did everyone fall into the ditch of despair and desserts? I did ok, not great, over the past week or so. Up a couple pounds, but far less than I would have been if I weren’t being so vigilant. How’d y’all do? Keeping up the resolve for New Years Eve? It will be easy for me as we are staying in and ringing in 2017 with the east coast. Also, threw away the leftovers that were calling to me from the recesses of the fridge and pantry.

I was overly optimistic in hoping I’d lose a little, but at least I didn’t gain. I’m going to schedule a cholesterol test for a couple months from now; knowing I have that coming up helps me to eat healthier food.

As mentioned upthread, I ate way too many sugary things in the last few weeks. But I am back from family visiting and have returned to my running and yoga routine as well as cutting back on the eating and the wine.

My weight remained stable. D was visiting and brought a few treats from a NYC bakery, but surprisingly we haven’t eaten all of it! Worst transgression was a bowl of HD ice cream with “Christmas Morning Cereal” topping it for dessert Christmas day. Kept up my running and other exercise this week, tomorrow morning I am running with my group, then running a 5k tomorrow evening, then going out to dinner at a nice restaurant with H. Menu is limited because of NYE but it’s a local farm to table, healthy eating. Cleaned out the refrigerator and freezer this morning so am ready to start 2017 clean.

The busier I am, the easier it is not to overindulge! Great job, everyone!

Cleaning out the refrigerator is on my agenda this morning. The freezer still holds the remainder of the Christmas cookies, but sending D back home tomorrow with a big plate for her to share at her NYE party.

As usual, my quantity of eating was fine, it was the QUALITY. My breakfast routine became more carb oriented and just in general heavier dinners and more evening snacks. While I continued to meet my step goals and got in some form of “sweaty” exercise at least every other day I haven’t been able to do as much exercise or for as long as I like.

Overall, I think I can be back in a decent spot in a week or so. I don’t weigh myself, but “weigh” how I feel, the level of stomach bloat, etc. !

Mixed results for me… I gained 2-3 pounds, but that’s a lot less than last year. All in all pleased; going back to the gym yesterday felt good. And it usually doesn’t so…

I gained weight, but not as much as in years past. I found I was eating many more carbs than ever. I ate cookies and sweets, but not as much as I typically do. I still feel comfy in my clothes, but need to pull back right now to normal diet. Exercising has been almost non existent and restarted yesterday. I’d love to throw away the rest of the sweets, but I’m not allowed…grrrrr.

I only do two unlimited sweet/junk food days - Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The restof the days are focused on healthy foods and limited sugar, even if there are dinners, etc. going on.

Did we all make it through the holidays alive?!

Can we claim success at getting through the season? Back to work tomorrow for me so I call the holidays DONE.

I haven’t assessed the damage yet. Tomorrow morning my holiday is officially over, though.
