I have been a little afraid that just because of the nature of those that want to go to the school that the types of opinions and schools of thoughts will be very limited. I mean not that people are dumb just that opinions will be very homogenous and more or less conservative. Where I come from people are very different and so are the opinions which lead to very healthy and interesting discussions / friendly arguments.
I just wanted to know how often will there be good discussions about current issues such as the war the elections and will opinions be varied and diverse or are they all pretty much similar. I like to argue and sometimes play the role of devil’s advocate and I just want to know what i am getting myself into.

You will have a healthy discussion, much more so than you can realize. Read “Absolutely American” by David Lipsky and you will start to understand that the cadets are by no means robots, nor are the instructors. If anything, you will get a very strong bunch of opinions from many sides. You would be surprised.

Augustine,

Cadets and their parents come from all walks of life. You’ll find lots of different opinions from people here on cc. And at the academies you’ll find different types of cadets who are individual thinkers. However, I’d like to remind you that there are many, many places on the Internet for very healthy political discussions. The objective of college confidential’s service academy is to discuss the admissions process and service academy life. CC does not want to see discussions that can deteriorate as can happen when people are passionate about the topics. It can turn off students looking for admissions advice and we certainly don’t want to have them leave when they are looking for help.

I suggest that you try the Parents’ Forum or perhaps some people can direct you to other ites for healthy political discussion. If you’re considering attending West Point or another academy, you’ll find lots of people who would be happy to help you out.

Good luck!
