Healthy, No-Chemical, No Feather/No Down Pillow

I’m on the hunt for SAFE hypo allergic pillows. The memory foam ones with gel we bought from Costco made me wheeze, so I need to return them. I think I need to avoid down and feathers as well. Would love recommendations for good pillows with no chemicals. Thanks. We are currently sleeping on old inexpensive polyester pillows while we contemplate what to get to replace the many down and feather pillows we had in our home.

I’m researching cotton-filled, silk-filled, wool-filled, kapok-filled and other bed pillows and am wondering if anyone has experienced to share? H and I are back and side sleepers.

HImom, also take a look Down Altenative polyester fiber-filled pillows. I like the pillows in Marriott hotels.

Thanks! I’m going to try avoiding polyester and try something else, just to see how it goes. Am hoping someone here has been happy with something other than down, feathers, memory foam or polyester. Anyone?

Polyester fiber, not foam, is good and hypoallergenic because dust mites cannot feed off it.

Ok. But I believe there may still be some off gassing from what they make the polyester from and the chemicals used in the process. Don’t want to go from one problem to another.

Consider buying wool quilt batting, cutting to size, and zipping multiple layers into a pillowcover.

No, the fibers are just like polyester fabric fibers - no off gassing. The foam is different, because it is made by a process that traps the smells inside and needs to be aired out.

Wool and silk are the worst materials for allergy sufferers, because both are “food” for dust mites. Latex is supposed to be good as well as polyester fiberfills. Also, consider buying specialized dust mite-proof covers for mattress and pillows. Washing the bedding in really hot water often also helps because it kills the buggers.

Yes, we have allergy control barriers on all bedding.

About a year ago I replaced all our pillows with these from LLBean:

My kids have multiple allergies, and I am allergic to down. These are filled with Primaloft, which is polyester. So these may not meet your requirements, but they’re great pillows.

Ok. Bought a pair of down alternative pillows from Costco and will try them out. I will keep my fingers crossed

I baought a bamboo pillow, for over $30. I am curious what the chem experts think.

Own these and love them: http://www.thecompanystore.com/primaloft-black-label-pillows/po81-ps.html

I have this…and I love it.

Try here- they have “dust mite casing” too.

Down l is organic, and so is… polyester. In different meanings of this word (found in nature v organic compound). Not all organic materials are hypo-allergenic. Well, the material could be super-duper non-allergenic, but add the dust mites that stick to it, and it is a recipe for problems. I would stay away from buckwheat, but latex is OK (if the person is not allergic to latex in the first place).

Oh, one more thing: if a pillow cannot be cleaned by washing or steam, it needs to be replaced periodically. I wash my feathered pillows and Mr. polyester fiber filled pillows.

We tried washing the feather/down pillow. It became a soggy, lumpy mess. Haven’t tried again. Ditto with the polyester one. :frowning:
