heart wrenching movies

The other 2 scenes from It’s a Wonderful Life that really get to me-when the young George Bailey stops Mr. Gower from sending poisonous pills (and empathisizes with him for losing his son) and the scene with George Bailey sitting at the bar asking God for help (I’m not a praying man but…). Lots of little scenes like that even if you’ve seen it many times.

Lots of others have already been mentioned(including Blue-love that trilogy). Also Brassed Off, Local Hero ,Bridges of Madison County.

Agreed about many already mentioned, but I’ll add Fried Green Tomatoes. Oh, and the funeral in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

^francie12, your screen name made me think of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” which is a beautiful sad movie from the 1940s. The heroine, Francie Nolan, was played by Peggy Ann Garner who gave maybe the best performance I have ever seen from a child actor.

Also on my list: “La Strada,” “The Green Mile” (manipulative? maybe, but I cry buckets), “Dark Victory,” "Brief Encounter,"and “Boys Don’t Cry.” And “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

I can be flipping channels and run into the moment when the brother says “To my brother George, the richest man in town” and the tears start flowing.

Also the moment in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King where Aragorn says to the hobbits, “My friends, you bow to no one”.

“The Deer Hunter” was the first movie I remember seeing in the theater that moved me so completely. I don’t remember crying so much as having that overwhelming feeling of sadness and numbness afterwards and kept thinking about it over and over. Another movie I couldn’t stop thinking about where I got that similar feeling of sad and numb was “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. Many others of mine have already been mentioned, but I think my favorite is “Places in the Heart”. I especially loved the scene at the very end in the church when the plate is being passed hand to hand. Beautiful. I think I sobbed for at least half of “My Sister’s Keeper”. And, while I never saw “Up”, I do remember getting teary at “Wall E”!

Kramer vs. Kramer. An older movie. If someone can watch this without crying they aren’t human.

I’d forgotten that one.

I just watched Avatar again, and teared up when the tree fell.

Just finished watching The King’s Speech. Very emotional and inspiring. Had seen it also in the theater.

Kramer vs Kramer was infuriating. Joint custody you guys!

Toy Story 3, at the end when he is passing along his beloved friends to the little girl.

The Return of the King - “I know your face…Eowyn.” and when Frodo leaves.

Fiddler on the Roof - the train scene and Sunrise/Sunset - (both mentioned by many)

Running on Empty - I am surprised how this movie has stayed with me after only seeing it once in the theaters in 1988: particularly the piano duet between mother and son.

justlookingnow, I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest shortly after having read the book, and it had to have been one of the most depressing movie experiences ever. You know what’s going to happen, and the whole time you just keep saying to yourself it’s just a movie. Still so amazingly depressing, though. :(
