"Heavy" essays acceptable?

I’ve written a heartfelt essay on a subject I’ve kinda been thinking about for the past four years (living with the possibility of inheriting a mental illness from one of my parents). It is, unsurprisingly I guess, really heavy. Everybody I’ve shown it to has really liked or loved it, but I’m just not sure if I should be using it for college apps… I’ve heard from a number of people that entertaining essays are more what people should be aiming for. Does this sound like too dark a topic/is it alright to submit a deep, personal essay?

Sounds good to me.

As long as your personal essay is a meaningful representation of who you are, it doesn’t matter what kind of tone it takes on. You’ll be fine.

Mine is very heavy too. As long as heavy topics are written in the right way, they do pretty well.

I think it is a good idea to go for a heavy topic. Since most people choose to write something entertaining, many of them just turn out to be clich

Hi,
I am from England, and I am trying to go to the US

For SAT2’s I have done Physics (800) and Maths 2 (770)
I am yet to take the SAT1 - and have been using your guide for revision!!! (THANKS). Should I retake Maths 2 or not?

N.B. This was my first sitting of the exam.

Alright, thanks for all the advice everyone. Another question: my essay is strong and powerful and clearly shows a lot of emotional maturity, apparently… but it doesn’t really “show off”; I’m not talking about an extracurricular or an interest, doesn’t conclude by saying “I’m persistent” or “I’m an awesome person”. It’s just about a personal issue. One of my friends who read the essay said that perhaps college essays should be more showy than this. Does this sentiment make sense, and do others agree with it?

i was anorexic for a few years and recovered. i was advised against writing about it because anorexia is a mental illness and they may not accept me for liability reasons. everybody warned me not to write about it.

so be careful it won’t get you into a sticky situation
as for light funny essays, i don’t think that’s the only thing they look for
