A wonderful school often overlooked in north central/northwest OH with relatively low costs, but a great educational reputation. My D has been accepted is very interested. Their music dept is one of the best in OH including state schools.

Anyone else out there going to Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH? Right now it is the top choice for my daughter. The two most compelling pieces for her are the quality and depth of the music dept because she is interested in music ed and choral music - and their Honors Program which is top notch in our view. US News and others I think miss an important ingredient at Heidelberg by not looking at the Honors Program. The Templeton ratings list it as one of their schools for character building and intellectual growth because of the Honors Program. Templeton particularly mentions the way the faculty works together in developing this unique program.

My D is in the process with Heidelberg too. It wasn’t on our list early on but it has become a major possibility now.

My D was just at Heidelberg this past Sat for their Scholars Day. There was a total of 80 students and their families. It was a very good experience. We were really impressed even more with their Honors Program. My daughter will be in music, but we found also that they have strong science programs and are the only college based national water quality lab in the country. Also their anthropology program is of high quality. And they are amping up their business program both in bldg and in faculty. The Honors Program is called “The Life of the Mind” and really allows the 100+ students in that program along with the faculty who do very interesting multi-disciplinary classes to be creative. The program is comprised of four intellectual areas: the Scholar, the Scientist, the Artist and the Citizen. It will enable my daughter to have more freedom in her curricula, to get more credit hrs per semester, and to take some very interesting cross disciplinary classes like the one on the diamond which looks at chemistry, business, history, political and international issues involving diamonds. Another semester is focused on Empires past and present e.g. the US.

I am going to share here some postings I shared over the past year on another discussion board about Heidelberg:

My D has visited Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH twice and has been very impressed both time. I was familiar with Heidelberg and thought the campus would turn her off. She loved it. It has some old bldgs and a variety of new ones that mainly fit the old architecture. It has a few city streets running through it, but the overall campus is really connected well.

On her first tour a sophomore took her and a friend. Students were interacting with them all over the place. It really impressed my daughter and her friend. They had a lot of students converse with their tour guide and then with them.

The dorms had a variety. Nice for younger students…very nice for upperclass.

My D is interested in pol sci and music. Both faculty had good conversations with her and she really connected with them.

The admissions office has been very warm and informative. They have already let us know what potentially my D could get in the way of merit aid which has been very encouraging!

another posting:
The music dept is probably one of the college’s strongest depts. Great choral and vocal. Decent instrumental. Not sure about musical theater. A great reputation in OH. Very good placement of music ed - 100%.

It is easy for non music majors to participate, get credit and scholarship funds for participation.

My daughter is now a freshman at Heidelberg in the Honors Program and a music education major at this point. After a month she loves it educationally, socially, and as a community. They have and are making a lot of physical campus improvements and will announce a new president later this year.

I have been to Heidelberg a couple of times, but that was a long time ago. I have always held a very good impression of the school. I agree that it is one of those hidden gems we don’t hear enough about on these boards. I’m glad your daughter is enjoying her time there.
