Hello! I have reading q about practice test 7 section 8

Hi,
So I do not understand what the last sentence of the passage reading means in the collegeboard sat study guide(aka blue book). The sentence is " …here as elsewhere, of that ferocious envy of mediocrity for excellence that is the ruling passion of all systems of jobholders."
Also if someone can kindly provide the justification of why the answer for #12 of that passage is A and not E(as I had originally thought), it would be very appreciated.

Thank you for all who take the time to respond!

I haven’t gotten to that test yet, but are you aware there are answer explanations online? They could help with the answer you are confused about.

Can you please publish the question and optional answers in full?

Paraphrased “…at the college, just like in other places, mediocre people ferociously envy excellent people, and that particular kind of envy is prevalent in workplaces.”
