Hello. My name is Andrew Jo. I am currently a freshman at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City. I would like to know how to prepare myself for admissions to prestigious colleges and universities such as MIT. How should I study to obtain good grades (93+) in school? How should I prepare for the PSAT and the SAT? Is it true that you have to stay up all night to gain admission to Harvard? Do you actually have to work that hard?

How should I study to obtain good grades (93+) in school? By studying.
How should I prepare for the PSAT and the SAT? By taking practice tests.

That above post was unnecessarily sarcastic. The kid is a freshman in HS give him a break. At least he is asking.

How should I study to obtain good grades (93+) in school?

Obviously working hard and finding a great study space. Quiet or with a little noise as you prefer. I used to go to the library after having an after school snack or my practice (I played sports.) Also, make good relations with your teachers and guidance counselor, get to know them as you might need letters of rec later so it is best they know you as a person. If you have questions ask your teachers if they are available after class or during lunch break for help. Of course take as many AP courses as you can. There is not right or wrong way to study, it just is how you feel most comfortable. Of course distractions like the TV or internet are not good. Try a little light music if you need some noise.

If your family can afford a prep course that is great. If not get a hold of an SAT guide. Collegeboard has an official guide I believe. You can buy one for 20 dollars or so. I would advise studying the summer before you take your PSAT. And take the practice exams while you time yourself. The exam is as much about timing as it is about content. You have to be quick.

Is it true that you have to stay up all night to gain admission to Harvard? Do you actually have to work that hard?

No. If you study smart and without distraction you should be able to get your work done without depriving yourself of sleep. My friend used to write every hour of his day down and how he would spend it so he would not waste time. It is more about time management. Of course occasionally you might stay up late or all night, but minimize this and no it is not necessary

Finally, it is not just about grades and test scores. You have to get involved in activities you have a passion for and be a well rounded person. After all, HS is about fun too.

Good luck, I will be happy to answer any more questions you have.

Does it look better on your transcript if you took APs and got 5 in your sophomore year without going through a course in school and if everyone else in your school takes it in their junior year? (Talking about Calc AB and Physics B here).
