As an incoming junior, what should I begin to start doing to improve my chances of getting into Duke or any other great college?

As of right now my GPA UW is a 3.7
I attend a one of the top private schools in the Southeast
I have taken 9 years of Piano (don’t plan on any kind of music in college)
Am an Eagle Scout

I am not a member of many clubs
I do play golf and I believe that I can develop to become a very competitive golfer by the end of my senior year.

I scored a 4 on AP Euro History my sophmore year
I am taking 4 AP courses this year: Chemistry, Physics, US History, and English
I believe that I have a pretty difficult courseload except for the fact that I took just Algebra II last year and have to take Trig this year. This puts me at taking pre-cal my senior year, which I DO NOT WANT TO DO! I want to be taking Calc AB senior year. I feel that is my only weakness in my courseload.

I am hoping to conduct a major research project during next summer or in my senior year.
I also plan on starting a huge fundraiser where over 100K will be raised and given to local animal shelters throughout my area.

In college I want to focus on pre-med, but also delve into business somewhat.

There, that is my situation. Please feel free to make any comments or suggestions that you may have to offer. You won’t hurt my feelings =P

Hm, that’s interesting. At my high school, after Algebra 2 we could either take pre-cal or trig… and most didn’t take trig. I ended up taking pre-cal over the summer because that way i could take AP music theory as a junior (it was at the same time as honors pre-cal).

Anyway, I think that you would be fine with pre-cal. Your courseload for this year looks good, and your GPA is pretty good. If you could move it to perhaps the 3.8 range this year, you’ll increase your chances.

Are you on the golf team at your school? You may want to consider doing some community service or something… though I’m not sure how starting things junior year is looked upon in the admissions office. I know it’s pretty bad to be starting things as a senior, but I think starting stuff as a junior is fine.

That’s all I have to comment on. Do well on your standardized tests, too, and you should be in good shape to apply next year!

Thanks seahorse!
Yes, I am on the golf team at school and do compete regularly in tournaments throughout the southeast that are very competetive. Does anyone know about the golf team at Duke? I would like to know everything that I can because maybe I can get a scholarship for golf, if thats possible at Duke.

Well, my school doesn’t offer summer school credit =/ so I can’t get credit for any math unless I take it during the school year. I would have taken Trig during the summer if it was possible.
I am planning on joining some clubs this year, but I think I might be getting a job so that would interfere with the afterschool activities of the club. Which do you think is more important, clubs or holding a job during school?
Also for community service, boy scouts does help alot, but also my fundraiser for Animal shelters is a big community service thing for me.
Thanks

the golf program at duke is quite good…i think. i know that women’s golf is consistently one of the best programs in the country but i’m not sure about the men’s program. the duke sports website www.goduke.com you could probably find some information there. the Head coach is Rod Myers. his email and contact information are available at http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=22553&SPID=1837&DB_OEM_ID=4200&ATCLID=152651&Q_SEASON=2006

good luck!

awesome! thanks ssorman

i know like half the guy’s golf team at duke. it’s a competitive program. one guy my year won the ny state hs championship his senior year of high school. mayor guiliani’s son is on the team. most of the team had many awards and titles by junior year. duke does give scholarships for the golf team-- maybe not full scholarships, but again, those typically go to the kid who won the state championship, etc. it’s really not that easy to get recruited to play d-1 golf if you haven’t already become a seriously competitive player in your jr yr of high school. it’s not impossible, but coach myers probably has guys in mind for your year. it’s worth a shot-- but golf shouldn’t be your ‘in’ on your application. good luck though!! it’s a great, great team. the guys are really cool.

otherwise, i’d say that leadership is key and afterschool jobs are never looked down upon. if it’s possible to mix up clubs and a job then that’s pretty sweet.

you can probably walk on the team if you aren’t recruited, though they don’t give scholarships to walk ons. one of my friends walked on the golf team his freshman year.
