Help a not-so-top end student?

Last year, I was a senior. For the life of me, I couldn’t decide where I wanted to go. I eventually decided on Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus.

Well, I wasn’t very happy there. Wasn’t a very good match for my personality, I was depressed as hell, yadda yadda yadda, poor me and all that. To make a long story short, I withdrew from the school and now find myself in community college.

I hate it here. With a passion. What’s worse is that I have no clue where I want to go next - not to a SUNY school, that’s for sure.

So, what I’m wondering is: what next? I think that I want to study philosophy, but with a fairly average high school GPA and standardized test scores (28 ACT, 1270 SAT), as well as my status as a dropout, I don’t think I have many options. (To be fair to myself, though, I’ve taken AP tests in European History, English Language, English Literature, U.S. History, and U.S. Government and Politics, and received 5’s on all of them but the Literature, which was a 4.)

Is there any way out of this mess? Any activities I could undertake while at community college to transfer to a decent liberal arts college (preferably one that offers both philosophy and classics)? Or should I be aiming for a big state school?

… and, by the way, if anyone has any suggestions as to schools to look at, I’d be grateful. At the moment, I’m smitten by UC-Santa Cruz and Whitman College.

I think you have plenty of options. There are several state universities along with some small colleges that would accept you in your unique circumstance that are still great schools, just widen your parameter.

Just because top colleges are somewhat out of the picture, doesn’t mean that you are out of options.

(im staying in the west, cause that’s what it looks like you are looking for)
ASU
UofA
UC-Boulder
plenty of cali schools, SDSU, USD

Obviously not over-the-top, but a great education nonetheless.

Im no expert, but i hope that helped…

Go to a small LAC, you will be happier than you are now

Since you are looking at UC Santa Cruz, I’d suggest looking at University of Oregon. U of O is very similar to Santa Cruz, but it’s more of a college town. The campus is beautiful, the school isn’t too large (16,500 compared to about 15,000 at Santa Cruz), and they have a lot of top programs. The students are very laid back and friendly.
