HELP: Accepted as a transfer to Penn vs. staying at W&M?

Hi! Let me start this off by saying I’m just looking for some honest opinions. I am currently a student at William & Mary, and I currently have a 3.75 gpa majoring in neuroscience (my science gpa is around a 3.95). I was accepted as a transfer student to Penn CAS as a junior.

I am a pre-dental student, and my main concern is to be accepted into a great dental school. Penn offered me amazing financial aid, but I may need to spend an extra year there to graduate with my major and pre-dental requirements (even so, three years at penn will still be less than two years here).

i decided to transfer mainly because of finances, but also because i am pretty much apathetic towards W&M. the professors here are incredible, the classes are tough, but i would prefer being closer to home. i never really found my “niche” here. however, i am already involved in research, shadowing, and have great professor relationships here at W&M.

would you recommend that i transfer to penn? i heard that their sciences are EXTREMELY difficult, but i also heard the same about W&M and i have found that classes here are manageable. although penn is a better school, would it be better for me to stay at a school that i am more comfortable at then start new? at penn, i would still need to finish orgo 2, gen chem 2, and biochem.

thanks so much, i really appreciate your help :)

If you’re doing well at W&M, you should do well at Penn. Also, if you’re getting great financial aid then take those benefits! You can get involved with extracurriculars at Penn, I’m sure they offer many opportunities. Out of curiosity how did you take orgo 1 without completing general chem 2?

thank you  at w&m you have to take gen chem 1, orgo 1, orgo 2, then gen chem 2.

im just wary of everyone’s posts about how hard penn is, as i heard the same stuff about w&m and it isnt so hard here. this is such a difficult decision and there is no one to really discuss my options with. ive even talked to some dentists and doctors about it, and most said to go to penn but others said to stick it out at w&m.

You sound like a great student, so academics won’t be too bad for you anywhere, if you drop in GPA, it probably won’t be too far, so I wouldn’t worry too much about rigor, you were accepted for a reason.

You said, however, that you feel pretty apathetic toward W&M, so if you’re truly excited about UPenn, then go there! There are a ton of people who would love to have your problem, and if you don’t think spending an extra year as an undergrad is too much of a sacrifice, I’d go to Penn. The big name recognition will be nice as well when you’re applying to dental school and med schools.

“three years at penn will still be less than two years here”

Which means that if you would finish in fewer than three years, you would save even more. I think that this one is a no-brainer. Go to Penn.
