HELP - accidentally reported myself as an independent student

I know this is an insanely stupid mistake but I somehow didn’t catch it until after I had submitted my first few applications. I filled out all of my basic information months ago and never looked back, but apparently I accidentally checked off that I’m financially independent from my family and didn’t report anything about their employment or education. As soon as I discovered the error, I immediately emailed all of the schools with the correct information. Only two have responded so far and both just told me to upload any corrections or updates to my application as an additional file in my applicant portal. I’m so mad at myself and so scared that this dumb mistake will lower my chances after putting so much effort into crafting a strong application. Could this negatively impact my chances because of false information or carelessness?

I would not think of this appearing like you were trying to get an unearned admissions advantage, it is instead only really relevant to financial aid considerations. So obviously you are doing the right thing to correct it, but I would not worry about the Admissions Office thinking anything of it.

Don’t know your school list or anything about you, but what’s done is done. You made an honest mistake and corrected it. I’m sure it happens.

I would think it would mostly have impact to aid and not admissions and you’ve corrected it. If you don’t hear back from the schools that haven’t yet responded, look up on your admission counselor online and call to confirm they received your email. Many schools, especially at deadline time, have more work than they can handle so a response may simply be delayed.

But you’ll be fine - and if you have concern (you likely needn’t), add a few auto admit or easy admit schools - so you have comfort in your mind, of having a place to land.

But personally, I wouldn’t sweat it - because it will all get worked out.

Good luck
