So I was making a smore in my microwave, and I went to the bathroom. By the time I got back the marshmallow had exploded and the room reeks of smoke. I’m scared to open the microwave because I don’t want to set off the smoke detectors, especially since someone did the same thing yesterday except with popcorn…
What can I do?

p.s.
I already turned off and unplugged the microwave

Turn on any vent fans & open any windows and doors.
Then open the microwave in tiny bursts, open & close, open & close, to let little bits of smoke out at a time if it is really full of smoke

Okay, I turned off the microwave and most of the smoke went away with the open-shut method, but it still reeks…any ways to clean/eliminate the odor? I feel so guilty about this…

If the smoke smell in the room is very heavy and won’t dissipate after a few hours with the windows open you may have to scrub the place down - wash the curtains, shampoo any carpets, use Febreeze or something similar on the upholstery, etc.

I agree with opening all windows and using a fan.

To freshen the microwave, combine ¼ cup vinegar and 1 cup of water in a microwaveable bowl and microwave for 5 min. Let it cool for a few minutes then wipe the inside of the microwave. Repeat the process this time substituting the vinegar with quartered lemon pieces in a bowl of water.

You could also bake an apple pie or banana bread or cinnamon rolls. Or boil a pot of water and throw some orange peel and cinnamon sticks on it for a couple of minutes then simmer. However, since you messed up something as easy as marshmallows I suggest sticking with opening the windows and the fan then later use Febreze.

For future reference, making smores in the microwave takes about 10 seconds, and you have maybe five seconds between a puffy marshmallow and a smokey marshmallow catastrophe. Take the bathroom break before ya nuke 'em next time ;)
