HELP CANDYMAN! Essay Format Problem

I am applying to Lafayette and have written my essay for the supplement, but I am having problems.

My essay falls under the 2000 character limit and I can enter into the submission box without a problem; but when I view the Print Preview option, the bottom half of my essay is cut off because of line breaks that I put in for formatting effect.

Is there some way to remedy this issue, or should I submit the essay separately? How should I address this issue?

StargateGuy,

How important are those line breaks to your essay? Are they more gimmicky than anything else, or do they add to the conveyed meaning of your work?

If all else fails, feel free to send your essay separately through the mail. Just be sure to include a short letter explaining the circumstances (with your name and L# clearly listed) so the essay makes it into your application folder.

Justin,

Wow! Thanks for the prompt response!

The line breaks are essential to convey the attitude behind the message; if I send the essay separately via snail mail, then what should I do about the essay box on the supplemental application itself? Should I write “Sent via snail mail” in the box, and then hope for the best?

And what is the L#? Does that get assigned when I submit the common app? Cuz I haven’t sent the common app anywhere yet, so I don’t know if I have a L# or not.

ALSO, I am still filling in the common app and I’ve hit a snag. In the Activities section, it asks for hours per week and weeks/yr…but that kind of format doesn’t really fit my involvement because it doesn’t account for hours spent in the summer.

For example, I spend 3 hours a week at Boy Scout meetings during the school year; but during the summer I go backpacking for a straight week or even 2 weeks at a time. Should the summer hours be “averaged out” into the hrs/wk section? For example, this would cause my “hrs/wk” to jump from 3 to 8 hrs/wk, 52 wks/yr…when actual hours are 3hrs/wk spent at meetings, and then the summer hours “add up” to the extra 5 per week.

Thanks,
SG

StargateGuy,

Yes, put a note in the text field that you’ve send your supplemental response via snail mail.

My bad – you won’t receive an “L Number” (Lafayette’s own system of student identification) until after you submit your application materials. Just use your social security number, instead.

Don’t get bogged down by that whole hrs/week, weeks/yr format. Just provide “averaged” estimates. If you feel you need to explain your involvement in greater detail, feel free to include that sort of information elsewhere on your activities list.
