Help! Can't decide between UW or Cal Poly SLO for electrical engineering

First time using this site apologies if posted in the wrong location.

I am OOS and my parents are willing to cover the cost for both unis, so for me the tuition is not a concern. From what I read UW is more research orientated (being a great place for masters/PhD) while Cal Poly SLO is more hands-on (with more labs and workshops). I am very confident about studying electrical engineering and have no intention is switch majors.

At the moment I am slightly leaning towards UW mostly because I love the city and the campus is beautiful. However, I think Cal Poly SLO may be better for employment into large technology companies.

Any advice for which uni to pick? tysm

Well UW is in the mecca of tech so I’d disagree with your assessment.

And frankly, most colleges place people in tech. I mentored a UTK grad headed to Seattle in May.

Have you visited both ? Sounds like you’d prefer UW so given that, I’d go there. Ultimately you’ll work in the location in which you apply to jobs, which will likely be done online.

Both are ABET accredited for EE.

Are you able to attend the admitted student days for both?

At UW, you would not be guaranteed the ECE major. Would that be a concern?

At CPSLO, you are directly admitted to the major, but changing major is not guaranteed. See Changing Majors Within the College of Engineering - Engineering Student Services - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

Which UW?

At Washington, you enter as engineering undeclared and must apply for competitive admission to major. EE appears to be only minimally competitive: Placement data | UW College of Engineering

At Wisconsin, you need to maintain a college GPA that has to be above a threshold higher than 2.0 to stay in the engineering major. For EE, it is 2.8 technical and 2.5 overall: https://engineering.wisc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/GPA-Requirements-2026-2027.pdf

At Wyoming, there does not seem to be any barrier to entering or changing to an engineering major.

University of Washington Seattle. I’m DTC so it shouldn’t be hard to get into electrical & computer engineering. Luckily I also got accepted to Cal Poly SLO as electrical engineer major, so no need to worry about switching majors.

Congratulations on two amazing options! Honestly both are excellent schools, but also very different in feel and size. Engineering at both will set you up nicely. I am a big proponent of fit. Where are you likely to thrive? Location, one small town and other large city. If you haven’t, get on each campus. Look beyond the tours. Talk to students. Find out about clubs that might interest you. Good luck, you cannot go wrong here.
