I’ve been accepted at UC Santa Cruz, Case Western Reserve, University of Toronto, Ohio State, and a few others that I unfortunately cannot afford to go to. I was also waitlisted at UC Berkeley. Case Western was my first choice, and they gave me a generous scholarship, but it is still out of reach financially. I’m trying to decide what my next move should be. Other schools I was accepted at but probably cannot afford are Reed College and the University of Rochester. I’m planning on studying theoretical physics, and am in two advanced math and physics classes that were designed specifically for me and one other person. What do you guys think is my best option?
Forgot to mention, I’m from California.
Is UC Santa Cruz affordable for you?
Yes, but I’m not completely sure if I want to go there. I don’t know how respected the physics department is.
Very respected. What is your target price and gpa / SAT ?
45k a year is the max we can do. My GPA is something around 3.82 unweighted, 4.25 weighted. SAT is 1490. I also have family in Toronto, which is very important for me.
U of Arizona is top 10 physics. Right at the fringe budget wise. ASU is very good but so is UCSC. But a bad housing problem.
U Alabama and UAH will both be $20k ish. They’ll have plenty for you. You can still apply. UAH is smaller and has defense contractors in droves in the immediate surrounds.
You can also still apply to Buffalo. It could make price. Close to Toronto.
Then there’s WUE.
You have affordable options and can still apply.
I’ll add. Tons of colleges can handle you. You are solid but even with your current classes, they are well prepared for you. Even if ucsc weren’t great and it is, the trades is affordability. But u have great options still open.
I have to commit by May 1st.
U cannot go to a school you cannot afford.
You can apply those I noted. All will be quick acceptances. The Baja and Arizonas have auto merit based on stats. That’s why I know the prices.
May 1 or not - u don’t commit to where you can’t afford. U can cc worst case but u have time but need flexibility
Bottom line - when you have a budget there’s a proper way to build a list. You didn’t build properly so n. But u can still save yourself.
