help choosing classes - incoming sophomore

my school requires that each student take (at least) 3 yrs of a fine art and 5 yrs of a foreign language. as of last yr i have fulfilled my fine art requirement (orchestra) and am one year away from finishing my foreign language (french). i dislike both subjects a lot … especially french, where my grades have been wavering and i’ve gotten a few Bs. my dad and i have already decided that i’m gonna take my last year of french this summer on flvs to get it over with. i’m questioning this decision tbh? i think it’ll look bad to suddenly switch to virtual school. however, i don’t think there’s much room for argument at this point.

so what’s left to decide is what will replace french in my schedule. my dad believes i should continue with orchestra until senior year. i completely disagree … i’m terrible in the class and probably won’t be able to achieve anything, and it also makes it impossible to take some classes i really want to take in junior and senior year. he thinks it’s the better choice bc it looks bad for me to drop that line of study so early on. :-S

i want to replace french with ap seminar. it seems like a fun class and i’m excited to take it.

  1. should i take french online?
  2. if yes to 1: is continuing orchestra the right thing to do?
  3. if no to 2: do yall recommend ap seminar??

(it might seem strange that i’m mentioning my dad so much. he insists on being a huge force in all of my academic decisions and it’s generally rly hard to argue with him so keep that in mind i guess?)

thank you so much for any help you guys can offer!!!

“I’m terrible in the class and probably won’t be able to achieve anything, and it also makes it impossible to take some classes I really want to take in junior and senior year.”

I think a lot of this depends on what classes you want to take your junior and senior years. Personally, if you were my child, I would allow you to take French online (because I’m a parent who doesn’t care how the class is taken, just take it) and I would allow you to give up orchestra if you disliked it as much as you say you do, although I would try to encourage you to stick with it if I thought you had talent. I like the idea of AP Seminar (and Capstone). DD’s school is offering Capstone for the first time this year, and it seems like a great way to incite learning through projects that actually interest individual students while giving them the tools they need to learn how to do college-level research projects.

Flvs doesn’t have French 5. You’d have to take the equivalent at a community college, where it’s be college level 4 ( often called 202 , or 220 ).
Sure take seminar and capstone, and one class you 'ready currently really looking forward to ( make sure to let that enthusiasm shine in your essays .)

thanks for the help!! flvs does have french 3 but it’s hidden somehow? i had to call to be given the sign up form online.
i think i’ll end up taking ap seminar!
