My son is deciding between the following business schools, from cheapest to most expensive considering merit aid (all OOS): Haslam (Tenn), Farmer (Miami-Ohio), Isenberg (UMass-Amherst), Lerner (Delaware), Kelley (Indiana), and Pitt. Most expensive about $15k more per year than cheapest, though cost not really an issue for us. Realize Kelley the highest rank, but doubt he wants to go into finance/Wall Street so not sure how much that matters. Probably looking to come back to DC area or mid-atlantic at least I would think. Concerned that Kelley & Haslam might be too big for him as they each have more than twice the number of undergrad business students as the others on this list. Looking for somewhere he will get the best education and best develop his skills so can succeed post-college. Appreciate any thoughts anyone has. Thanks!
He can get the best education and develop skills anywhere. It will be up to him to take advantage of opportunities presented, to get to know profs etc.
If you look at Miami (rural), Pitt (urban), UMass (rural ish but college town) and UD - suburban-ish.
Has he toured ? Is there a preference ? You can end up anywhere from anywhere today - with the internet.
Has he been to all ? Obviously that’s the best thing you can do.
If so, does he feel about each ? For example, when we visited Miami, it came right off from the drive up. Beautiful school, great rep, but mine wanted urbanish. Dies yours ha e strong leanings.
Best of luck in finding the right fit. And I agree here that rank isn’t relevant.
Has visited all but Tennessee and Miami Ohio, which will be visiting next month. May try to see Delaware and UMass again because saw them so long ago before admission. Son doesn’t seem to have strong thoughts good or bad on schools has seen - I think Pitt a bit too urban for him though we did like it.
Miami feels like a big LAC. Good b school.
Considering where he wants to end up, I would seriously consider UD Lerner, which just received a $71M gift:
Miami of Ohio is a diamond in a rough school. Good outcomes and students love the school /campus . But if it’s my kid and we are Midwest I would be at Indiana since we get to spend your money. Great Big Ten school. Great B school with a great reputation regardless of what type of business. If you decide not to pursue lots of good choices of majors. Really nice campus. Really good pizza. Lots of Rah, Rah and pride.
But I have to admit that UD gift is intriguing. Especially in the climate we are in but I would find out more closely if the spend will help the current students going in.
I wouldn’t be so sure that the UD gift will be relevant to students in the next year or two. It takes time to develop things - such as the new building that will come.
I think it’s a nice press release that maybe will help students 3 or 5 years plus out.
I would think that also and why I suggested a deeper dive into that. I also don’t know much about the program but will educate myself on it.
Oh I see at the end. Sorry.
