In an assortment of cereals, 23 types contain oats and 25 types contain rice. Some of these cereals contain both oats and rice. If 16 cereals in this assortment contain oats but not rice, how many cereals contain rice but not oats?

Please explain how you got your answer. thanx.

K I figured it out. :D

Use a venn diagram. Draw two circles that are overlapping just a bit in the center, then in the circle on the right (the part of that circle that doesnt belong to the other circle) write 16. That part of the circle is your “16 cereals in thsi assortment contain oats but not rice”. Then since there are 23 types that contain oats, you know the rest must be 7, and they will contain both rice and oats so write 7 in the part where both circles overlap. Then on the left, its easy. Just do 25 - 7 = 18. You do that b/c there are 25 types that contain rice and 7 of them also contain oats. So 18 leftover that dont contain any oats.

Sounds a little confusing at first, but its actually really easy :D

Wow good explanation, good method. I’ll have to remember that.

And now I feel stupid. :D
