My D will be spending 6 weeks at Dobbs Ferry NY this summer. Any helpful suggestions on finding safe housing in the area? She does not drive but is good on a bike if the roads are bicycle friendly. Alternatively she can get on a shuttle bus at the train station to where she needs to go each day. I don’t yet have more details. Thanks very much.

Try contacting the Masters School on Clinton Ave. I don’t know what they have going on in the summertime, but they have several dorms (boarding prep) on campus. Maybe she could work something out economically.

That is a good suggestion–could also ask at Hackley, in Tarrytown–regular train service between Tarrytown and Dobbs Ferry (two or three stops apart, I think). Roads are not bike friendly except possibly within local residential areas. Route 9 is very busy and winding with narrow shoulders and I would strongly recommend NOT trying to bike except recreationally. But the train line (Hudson Division, MetroNorth) is very good–Dobbs is a local stop. she might also look into dorm housing at some of the small local colleges in Riverdale, like Mount St. Vincent, which is also a loval stop on the Hudson Division.

also, Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry.

While the roads are not bike friendly, especially Rte 9, she may find that the Old Croton Aqueduct trail serves her well. I haven’t biked it–I don’t know anything about the entrances and exits–but it’s definitely worth looking into, even if only for recreation on days off.
Good luck!

padad,
Agree with the above suggestions to try housing at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry or the Hackley School in Tarrytown. Also agree that the Croton Acqueduct trail will serve her well. I have walked it many times and there are many bicyclists who use it. It goes from Yonkers in southern Westchester and passes through the towns/villages of Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown and on up into Northern Westchester. If you have more specific questions please ask. I am quite familiar with the area and feel free to PM me if you’d like.

Thanks a bunch for your wonderful suggestions. I just contacted Mercy college, which has a summer residence program for non-Mercy students. Sounds ideally suited for my D.

Momof3sons, I will send you a PM this evening. Thanks in advance.

Like many suburbs, Westchester is generally not a great place to be without a car, I’m afraid.

It’s not great without a car, but you can probably walk or bike to most things in Dobbs Ferry and then take the train to the city. The only thing is that if the Mercy housing is where I think it is it’s a bit of hike to stores in town. I don’t think a summer resident is going to care much that most public transportation goes north/south and hardly anything goes east/west.
