I have an urgent need for dress pants for my son for a looming wedding. The size seems to be a problem. His waist size is 30", the length he needs is 32". We were at a store today and verified that this size fits. The problem is that there were very few pairs of pants in this size, and none that we liked. I’ve just looked on the Brooks Brothers website and they don’t even have 30x32 - their 30" pants only come in 30" length, you need larger waist sizes to get 32" length.

Does anyone know where I can find a good range of sizes? Or should I be looking in boys’? As far as I can tell, the boys’ sizes don’t go up quite as high as what he needs.

My son also wears a 30x32. The nicest pants we have been able to find without tailoring were Dockers — at Kohls. We have also been able to find pants at Urban Outfitters. When he got a suit, we had to have some massive tailoring done!

How dressy do the pants need to be? Can he get away with ironed khakis? If so, you will have many choices: J. Crew, Banana, Gap, Old Navy, & Vineyard Vines all sell khakis (AKA chinos) on-line in 30W, 32L. My son wears 31-34 but will soon need a 36. I will be forced to go up to 32W in order to find 36 L.

I agree that BB’s sizing is annoying. I tried to purchase an athletic cut suit for my son as he has a nine inch drop, but I would have to move up in the waist size in order to get the length I need.

If you do go the khaki route, my son preferred the feel of the Old Navy pants over the Gap. Banana has dress pants sold separately from the suit jackets. Good luck!

Go into the men’s suit section. There should be a couple of racks of slacks, hopefully with each rack having a little something to chose from. 32 is a very normal length, 30 is a bit small for a man’s waist, but there should be a little something on each rack. Btw unless he’s in the wedding party, dark jeans, dark shoes & log sleeve dress shirt should work. Slap a tie on your son if you have you can, but good luck with a teenager and a tie.

My DS wears that size. I go to our local Mens store. They have the correct waist but the length is too long usually 34 or 36… So I have them hem the pants it usually only takes a day for them to do it.

I don’t recommend Lands End for young men. The legs will be funny looking on a slim man—wide and not a modern leg. Banana Republic pants are better looking on young slim men.

collegeshopping, I was on the Nordstrom website earlier, and they have “tall” sizes. These pants, on sale for 50% off, come in 31x36, and the description implies that they have a slim fit:

eastcoastcrazy, we were in Kohl’s today. I was hoping to find what we needed without going to the mall. They had only a couple of dress pants in 30x32, and they were not the right color. My son has a navy blazer and white dress shirt, and I was hoping for taupe pants. I did find some beautiful ties at Kohl’s, either Ralph Lauren or Chaps, and they were reasonably priced. We bought a beautiful one.

I am looking for khakis as well as dress pants, so all these suggestions are appreciated.

Jc Penney on line has good options for tall/thin in dress pants and those looking for extra long length can order unhemmed and then I pay to have them rolled. (Sorry to hijack too😀)

Eddie Bauer has a dress pant, available in a modern, trimmer cut, that you can order by waist size and have custom hemmed. They’re not inexpensive but good quality.

The 30" waist, while desirable from a health perspective, makes finding men’s dress clothes harder to find, since typical clothing stores assume that men buying dress clothes are obese when deciding what sizes to stock.

Sizing is even more of a hassle for men with a small waist and large hip (for trousers) or chest (for suit coats or dress shirts).

Zappos has all sizes of Dockers. Free next day shipping.

I believe the Signature Khaki would be their dressiest khaki. The D2 Straight fit would be what a skinny young man would want – fairly trim fit. D3 is their standard fit. D4 is their “relaxed” fit. D1 is the hipster cut.

Another option is Marshall’s TJ Maxx. Their selection of 30s is not great, but a 30-32 is a very standard size. There’s a good chance you could find decent designer label polyester dress pants in that size, usually for about $20, probably in black. I’ve found nice plain dress pants from Perry Ellis and Louis Raphael there. Probably just what you are looking for. Hit or miss, but worth a shot.

Kohls is also a great option. Not just in the pants department (they usually have bunch of nice microfiber dress slacks), but they also sell wool suit separates. You buy the pants and suit jackets separately in mix and match sizes. 30-32 should be a standard size. Certainly available from the website if not the store. They’ve got regular fit and SLIM Fit options. The Dockers run a little big. The Kohl’s suit separates run smaller or true to size. That’s generally been my experience with all dress slacks.
